1. And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

l. [the] left [Strong: 2176 euṓnymos, yoo-o'-noo-mos; from G2095 and G3686; properly, well-named (good-omened), i.e. the left (which was the lucky side among the pagan Greeks); neuter as adverbial, at the left hand:—(on the) left.]

1). There are a number of judgments mentioned in Scripture, the Judgment Seat of Christ for believers (Romans 14:10-12); the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11-15); This Judgment is the judgment of the Nations, where nations/gentiles existing at the time of Christ’s return will be judged for their treatment of the Jews (my brethren). I may be wrong but it could possibly include true born again believers from all nations. Some scholars see this as a fulfillment of Joel 3:11, 12. The wording is similar. This judgment is also known as the judgment of the sheep and goat nations. The separation point in this judgment is how these treated Christ’s brethren (Matthew 25:34-46). Some scholars fit this as a compliment to James 2:14-26).

3:12 Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.

2). Barnes' Notes on the Bible: Shall set the sheep ... - By "the sheep" are denoted, here, the righteous. The name is given to them because the sheep is an emblem of innocence and harmlessness. See John 10:7, John 10:14-16, John 10:27; Psalm 100:3; Psalm 74:1; Psalm 23:1-6. On the right hand - The right hand is the place of honor, and denotes the situation of those who are honored, or those who are virtuous. See Ecclesiastes 10:2; Ephesians 1:20; Psalm 110:1; Acts 2:25, Acts 2:33. The goats - The wicked. See Ezekiel 34:17. The left - That is, the left hand. This was the place of dishonor, denoting condemnation. See Ecclesiastes 10:2.
