And this is the blessing of Judah: and he said, Hear, LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him unto his people: let his hands be sufficient for him; and be thou an help to him from his enemies.

1). Dr. Louis Goldberg, Deuteronomy: What the blessing for this tribe means is not clear. The Targum Onkelos paraphrases the first two lines to read: “Hear, O LORD, the prayer of Judah, when he goes into battle, and bring him back in peace.” Does this mean that Judah was reckoned as the head of the tribes as it led Israel into battle? If this was the case, then Judah was in a responsible position, and the prayer was that God would listen and would enable their military troops to return safely to their families. Even though the people of Judah might have to fight with their own hands, the Lord would battle on their behalf and preserve them. And interesting point emerges, in Moses entire blessing, the tribe of Simeon is not mentioned at all. Simeon’s inheritance was to be scattered among Israel (Genesis 49:7) and was placed in the allotment of the tribal territories, the tribe of Simeon was placed in the southern and western portion of the territory of Judah (Joshua 19:1).
