Acts 14:20

Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

a. NLT: But as the believers gathered around him, he got up and went back into the town. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.

b. NIV: But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.

c. YLT: And the disciples having surrounded him, having risen he entered into the city, and on the morrow he went forth with Barnabas to Derbe.

1. “Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city…”

a. Howbeit [Strong: 1161 de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

c. disciples [Strong: 3101 mathetes math-ay-tes' from 3129; a learner, i.e. pupil:--disciple.]

d. stood round about [Strong: 2944 kukloo koo-klo'-o from the same as 2945; to encircle, i.e. surround:--compass (about), come (stand) round about.]

e. him [Strong: 846 autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

f. he rose up [Strong: 450 anistemi an-is'-tay-mee from 303 and 2476; to stand up (literal or figurative, transitive or intransitive):--arise, lift up, raise up (again), rise (again), stand up(-right).]

g. and came [Strong: 1525 eiserchomai ice-er'-khom-ahee from 1519 and 2064; to enter (literally or figuratively):--X arise, come (in, into), enter in(-to), go in (through).]

h. into [Strong: 1519 eis ice a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:--(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), ...ward, (where-)fore, with. j. city [Strong: 4172 polis pol'-is probably from the same as 4171, or perhaps from 4183; a town (properly, with walls, of greater or less size):--city.]

1). There is no question that there was prayer for Paul, it seems the disciples also thought Paul was dead. It has been asked, Where was Barnabas while this was going on. Perhaps he was being restrained while this was carried out or maybe he was in another part of the town. The gospel record does not say. There is no mention of a miracle here, it just mentions that Paul got up. While some commentators believe there was a complete healing of Paul, others believe he was not really dead, just bruised and battered from the stoning and just got up. I can not help but read a lot into the phrase, “supposing he had been dead.” The inspired writer of Acts wrote that in the text. The previous verse clearly says the people who stoned Paul thought he was dead, the Scriptures do not say he was dead. An amazing thought about this is that after he was stoned, he went right back into the city. Then the next day he went to Derbe with Barnabas.

2). It is possible that some of the scars he wrote about in Galatians were received from this stoning.

a). Galatians 6:17 “…I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.”

b). marks [4742 * stigma] [Zodhiates: A mark, brand, as pricked into or burnt upon the body, such as the marks with which slaves and sometimes prisoners were branded.]

2. “…and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.”

a. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. the [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

c. day [Strong: 1887 epaurion ep-ow'-ree-on from 1909 and 839; occurring on the succeeding day, i.e. (2250 being implied) to-morrow:--day following, morrow, next day (after).]

d. he departed [Strong: 1831 exerchomai ex-er'-khom-ahee from 1537 and 2064; to issue (literally or figuratively):--come (forth, out), depart (out of), escape, get out, go (abroad, away, forth, out, thence), proceed (forth), spread abroad.]

e. with [Strong: 4862 sun soon a primary preposition denoting union; with or together (but much closer than 3326 or 3844), i.e. by association, companionship, process, resemblance, possession, instrumentality, addition, etc.:--beside, with. In composition it has similar applications, including completeness.]

f. Barnabas [Strong: 921 Barnabas bar-nab'-as of Chaldee origin (1247 and 5029); son of Nabas (i.e. prophecy); Barnabas, an Israelite:--Barnabas.]

g. to [Strong: 1519 eis ice a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:--(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), ...ward, (where-)fore, with.
