Acts 14:5


And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them,

a. NLT: Then a mob of Gentiles and Jews, along with their leaders, decided to attack and stone them.

b. NIV: There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.

c. YLT: and when there was a purpose both of the nations and of the Jews with their rulers to use them despitefully, and to stone them,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: When there was an attempt both on the part of the Gentiles and the Jews together with their rulers, to insult and abuse and molest [Paul and Barnabas] and to stone them,

e. Worrell Translation: But when a hostile movement was made, both of the gentiles and Jews with their rullers to maltreat and stone them;

1. “And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers…”

a. And [Strong: 1161 * de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. when [Strong: 5613 * hos hoce probably adverb of comparative from 3739; which how, i.e. in that manner (very variously used, as follows):--about, after (that), (according) as (it had been, it were), as soon (as), even as (like), for, how (greatly), like (as, unto), since, so (that), that, to wit, unto, when(-soever), while, X with all speed.]

c. there was…made [Strong: 1096 * ginomai ghin'-om-ahee a prolongation and middle voice form of a primary verb; to cause to be ("gen"-erate), i.e. (reflexively) to become (come into being), used with great latitude (literal, figurative, intensive, etc.):--arise, be assembled, be(-come, -fall, -have self), be brought (to pass), (be) come (to pass), continue, be divided, draw, be ended, fall, be finished, follow, be found, be fulfilled, + God forbid, grow, happen, have, be kept, be made, be married, be ordained to be, partake, pass, be performed, be published, require, seem, be showed, X soon as it was, sound, be taken, be turned, use, wax, will, would, be wrought.]

d. an assult [Strong: 3730 * horme hor-may' of uncertain affinity; a violent impulse, i.e. onset:--assault.]

e. both [Strong: 5037 * te teh a primary particle (enclitic) of connection or addition; both or also (properly, as correlation of 2532):--also, and, both, even, then, whether. Often used in composition, usually as the latter participle.]

f. of the [Strong: ton from 3588 * ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

g. Gentiles [Strong: 1484 * ethnos eth'-nos probably from 1486; a race (as of the same habit), i.e. a tribe; specially, a foreign (non-Jewish) one (usually, by implication, pagan):--Gentile, heathen, nation, people.]

2. “…and also of the Jews with their rulers…”

a. and also [Strong: 2532 * kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. of the Jews [Strong: 2453 * Ioudaios ee-oo-dah'-yos from 2448 (in the sense of 2455 as a country); Judaean, i.e. belonging to Jehudah:--Jew(-ess), of Judaea.

with [Strong: 4862 * sun soon a primary preposition denoting union; with or together (but much closer than 3326 or 3844), i.e. by association, companionship, process, resemblance, possession, instrumentality, addition, etc.:--beside, with. In composition it has similar applications, including completeness.]

c. their [Strong: tois from 3588 * ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

d. rulers [Strong: 758 * archon ar'-khone present participle of 757; a first (in rank or power):--chief (ruler), magistrate, prince, ruler.]

1). The poisoning of the minds of the Gentiles, the Jews and with the civil authorities continued to build until a violent act was concocted.

3. “…to use them despitefully, and to stone them,”

a. to use them despitefully [Strong: 5195 * hubrizo hoo-brid'-zo from 5196; to exercise violence, i.e. abuse:--use despitefully, reproach, entreat shamefully (spitefully).] [Zodhiates: to act with insolence, wantonness, wicked violence.]

b. and [Strong: 2532 * kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

c. to stone [Strong: 3036 * lithoboleo lith-ob-ol-eh'-o from a compound of 3037 and 906; to throw stones, i.e. lapidate:--stone, cast stones.]

d. them [Strong: 846 * autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

             1). The devil hates the gospel, he hates God, and he hates all people, but especially those          who       want to spread the gospel. This persecution was mentioned by Paul in 2 Timothy.

a). 2 Timothy 3:10, 11 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,
3:11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
