Acts 14:9

The same heard Paul speak: who steadfastly beholding him and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,

a. NLT: and listening as Paul preached. Looking straight at him, Paul realized he had faith to be healed.

b. NIV: He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed

c. YLT: this one was hearing Paul speaking, who, having stedfastly beheld him, and having seen that he hath faith to be saved,

d. Amplified Bible Classic:  He was listening to Paul as he talked, and [Paul] gazing intently at him and observing that he had faith to be healed,

e. Worrell Translation: The same was hearing Paul speaking, who, looking intently on him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,

f. Wuest Translation: If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from among the dead, you will be saved.

1. “The same heard Paul speak…”

a. The same [Strong: 3778 * houtos hoo'-tos, including nominative masculine plural houtoi hoo'-toy, nominative feminine singular haute how'-tay, and nominative feminine plural hautai how'-tahee from the article 3588 and 846; the he (she or it), i.e. this or that (often with article repeated):--he (it was that), hereof, it, she, such as, the same, these, they, this (man, same, woman), which, who.]

b. heard [Strong: 191 * akouo ak-oo'-o a primary verb; to hear (in various senses):--give (in the) audience (of), come (to the ears), (shall) hear(-er, -ken), be noised, be reported, understand.]

c. Paul [Strong: 3972 * Paulos pow'-los of Latin origin; (little; but remotely from a derivative of 3973, meaning the same); Paulus, the name of a Roman and of an apostle:--Paul, Paulus.]

d. speak [Strong: 2980 *  laleo lal-eh'-o a prolonged form of an otherwise obsolete verb; to talk, i.e. utter words:--preach, say, speak (after), talk, tell, utter.]

1). Paul was preaching the gospel and this man heard him. Paul was preaching the word. Paul was preaching faith.

a). Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

b). This man was hearing faith and receiving faith.

2. “…who steadfastly beholding him and perceiving that he had faith to be healed…”

a. who [Strong: 3739 * hos hos, including feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]

b. steadfastly beholding [Strong: 816 * atenizo at-en-id'-zo from a compound of 1 (as a particle of union) and teino (to stretch); to gaze intently:--behold earnestly (stedfastly), fasten (eyes), look (earnestly, stedfastly, up stedfastly), set eyes.] [Zodhiates: to look fixedly, gaze intently.]

c. him [Strong: 846 * autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

d. and [Strong: 2532 *  kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

e. perceiving [Strong: 1492 * eido i'-do a primary verb; used only in certain past tenses, the others being borrowed from the equivalent 3700 and 3708; properly, to see (literally or figuratively); by implication, (in the perfect tense only) to know:--be aware, behold, X can (+ not tell), consider, (have) know(-ledge), look (on), perceive, see, be sure, tell, understand, wish, wot.] [Zodhiates: the tenses derived from the meaning of eido form two families, one of which is ‘to see’, the other ‘to know’.]

1). This same Greek word is used in the life and ministry of Christ where He supernaturally knew things through the gifts of the Spirit about some of those who opposed him.

a). Matthew 9:4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?

b). Matthew 12:25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:

c). Mark 12:15 Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.

2). Paul was staring at this man. Why? Because the Holy Ghost was telling Paul about this man. The Spirit of God was telling Paul this man had faith to be healed. Paul was preaching faith, he was preaching that healing was part of the Covenant. This was no doubt an example of the manifestation of the gifts of the Spirit. It was the ‘perception’ or ‘knowledge’ that this man had faith to be healed. This was the manifestation of the word of wisdom or the word of knowledge, perhaps both.

a). 1 Corinthians 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit.

f. that [Strong: 3754 * hoti hot'-ee neuter of 3748 as conjunction; demonstrative, that (sometimes redundant); causative, because:--as concerning that, as though, because (that), for (that), how (that), (in) that, though, why.]

g. he had [Strong: 2192 * echo ekh'-o, including an alternate form scheo skheh'-o; (used in certain tenses only) a primary verb; to hold (used in very various applications, literally or figuratively, direct or remote; such as possession; ability, contiuity, relation, or condition):--be (able, X hold, possessed with), accompany, + begin to amend, can(+ -not), X conceive, count, diseased, do + eat, + enjoy, + fear, following, have, hold, keep, + lack, + go to law, lie, + must needs, + of necessity, + need, next, + recover, + reign, + rest, + return, X sick, take for, + tremble, + uncircumcised, use.]

h. faith [Strong: 4102 * pistis pis'-tis from 3982; persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself:--assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.]

i. to be healed [Strong: 4982 * sozo sode'-zo from a primary sos (contraction for obsolete saos, "safe"); to save, i.e. deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):--heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.] [Zodhiates: to save, deliver, make whole, preserve safe from danger, loss, destruction…Sozo occurs fifty-four times in the Gospels [fifty-six in the KJV]. Of the instances where sozo is used, fourteen relate to deliverance from disease or demon possession; in twenty instances, the inference is to the rescue of physical life from some impending peril or instant death; the remaining twenty times, the reference is to spiritual salvation.]

1). In light of the above definition I need to list some of the examples.

a). Matthew 9:22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole [sozo].  And the woman was made whole [sozo] from that hour.

b). Mark 10:52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole [sozo]. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

c). Luke 8:36 They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed [sozo].

d). Luke 8:48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole [sozo]; go in peace.

e). Luke 8:49, 50, 54, 55 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.

8:50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole [sozo].

8:54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.

8:55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.

2). One of the most revealing is a well-known passage in Acts 4 where physical healing is mentioned in conjunction with the Greek word also translated saved. Note closely in Acts 4:12 where both are used.

a). Acts 4:8-10  Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,

4:9 If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole [sozo];

4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

4:11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.

4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved [sozo].

3). This is the same Greek word used in Romans that tells us how to be saved.

a). Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

b). In light of all this instruction I believe healing is part of the New Covenant.
