Luke 1:48 


For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

1. “For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden…”


a. For [Strong: 3754 kerem keh'-rem from an unused root of uncertain meaning; a garden or vineyard:--vines, (increase of the) vineyard(-s), vintage.]


b. [he hath] regarded [Strong: 1914. epiblepo ep-ee-blep'-o from 1909 and 991; to gaze at (with favor, pity or partiality):--look upon, regard, have respect to.]


c. 1). Mary here was acknowledging her spiritual condition. As a faithful Mosaic Covenant believer she knew that outside of the righteous system that God had ordained for the Jewish people, there was no hope for humanity. This clearly evidenced by her whole praise report.

47 And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

48 For He has looked upon the low station and humiliation of His handmaiden. For behold, from now on all generations [of all ages] will call me blessed and declare me happy and [aa]to be envied!

49 For He Who is almighty has done great things for me—and holy is His name [to be venerated in His purity, majesty and glory]!

50 And His mercy (His compassion and kindness toward the miserable and afflicted) is on those who fear Him with godly reverence, from generation to generation and age to age.

51 He has shown strength and [ab]made might with His arm; He has scattered the proud and haughty in and by the imagination and purpose and designs of their hearts.

52 He has put down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of low degree.

53 He has filled and satisfied the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty-handed [without a gift].

54 He has laid hold on His servant Israel [to help him, to espouse his cause], in remembrance of His mercy,

55 Even as He promised to our forefathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.

 

2). As to the “low estate of his handmaiden” Mary knew her condition.

 

a). Romans 3:9-19 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

3:12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

3:13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:

3:14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:

3:15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:

3:16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:

3:17 And the way of peace have they not known:

3:18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.

3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

g. generations [Strong: 1074. genea ghen-eh-ah' from (a presumed derivative of) 1085; a generation; by implication, an age (the period or the persons):--age, generation, nation, time.]


h. [shall call] me [Strong: 3165. me meh a shorter (and probably originally) from of 1691; me:--I, me, my.]

i. blessed [Strong: 3106. makarizo mak-ar-id'-zo from 3107; to beatify, i.e. pronounce (or esteem) fortunate:--call blessed, count happy.]


1). The teaching of the Catholic Church that Mary was conceived in the womb immaculate and free from the sin of Adam is hogwash. So also is the teaching that she was taken up bodily into heaven at her death. Mary needed a Savior just as any person born on earth except Jesus, and in this praise report from Luke 1 establishes that truth.
