f. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: HASHEM said to the Satan, “From
where have you come?”
1. “And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou?...”
a. And the LORD [3068 * Yhovah]
[Strong: from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish
national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]
b. said [559 * 'amar aw-mar' a
primitive root; to say (used with great latitude):--answer, appoint, avouch,
bid, boast self, call, certify, challenge, charge, + (at the, give)
command(-ment), commune, consider, declare, demand, X desire, determine, X
expressly, X indeed, X intend, name, X plainly, promise, publish, report,
require, say, speak (against, of), X still, X suppose, talk, tell, term, X that
is, X think, use (speech), utter, X verily, X yet.]
c. unto Satan [7854 * satan]
[Strong: from 7853; an opponent; especially (with the article prefixed)
Satan, the arch-enemy of good:--adversary, Satan, withstand.]
d. whence [370 * 'aiyn] [Strong: probably
identical 369 in the sense of query (Compare 336); --where?
(only in connection with prepositional prefix, whence):--whence, where.]
e. comest thou [935 * bow’]
[Strong: a primitive root; to go or come (in a wide variety of
applications):--abide, apply, attain, X be, befall, + besiege, bring (forth,
in, into, to pass), call, carry, X certainly, (cause, let, thing for) to come
(against, in, out, upon, to pass), depart, X doubtless again, + eat, + employ,
(cause to) enter (in, into, -tering, -trance, -try), be fallen, fetch, +
follow, get, give, go (down, in, to war), grant, + have, X indeed, (in-)vade,
lead, lift (up), mention, pull in, put, resort, run (down), send, set, X (well)
stricken (in age), X surely, take (in), way.]
1). It appears that one of the main
reasons for Satan and the sons of God to present themselves before the LORD was
to give an account of their deeds.
2. “…Then Satan answered the LORD, and said…”
a. then Satan [7854 * satan]
[Strong: from 7853; an opponent; especially (with the article prefixed)
Satan, the arch-enemy of good:--adversary, Satan, withstand.]
b. answered [6030 * `anah] [Strong:
a primitive root; properly, to eye or (generally) to heed, i.e. pay attention;
by implication, to respond; by extens. to begin to speak; specifically to sing,
shout, testify, announce:--give account, afflict (by mistake for 6031),
(cause to, give) answer, bring low (by mistake for 6031), cry, hear,
Leannoth, lift up, say, X scholar, (give a) shout, sing (together by course),
speak, testify, utter, (bear) witness.]
c. the LORD [3068 * Yhovah]
[Strong: from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish
national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]
d. and said [559 * 'amar aw-mar' a
primitive root; to say (used with great latitude):--answer, appoint, avouch,
bid, boast self, call, certify, challenge, charge, + (at the, give)
command(-ment), commune, consider, declare, demand, X desire, determine, X
expressly, X indeed, X intend, name, X plainly, promise, publish, report,
require, say, speak (against, of), X still, X suppose, talk, tell, term, X that
is, X think, use (speech), utter, X verily, X yet.]
3. “…From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up
and down in it.”
a. from going to and fro [7751 * shuwt]
[Strong: a primitive root; properly, to push forth; (but used only
figuratively) to lash, i.e. (the sea with oars) to row; by implication, to
travel:--go (about, through, to and fro), mariner, rower, run to and fro.]
b. in the earth [776 * 'erets] [Strong:
from an unused root probably meaning to be firm; the earth (at large, or
partitively a land):--X common, country, earth, field, ground, land, X natins,
way, + wilderness, world.]
c. from walking up and down in it
[1980 * halak] [Strong: akin to 3212; a primitive root; to walk (in a
great variety of applications, literally and figuratively):--(all) along,
apace, behave (self), come, (on) continually, be conversant, depart, + be
eased, enter, exercise (self), + follow, forth, forward, get, go (about,
abroad, along, away, forward, on, out, up and down), + greater, grow, be wont
to haunt, lead, march, X more and more, move (self), needs, on, pass (away), be
at the point, quite, run (along), + send, speedily, spread, still, surely, +
tale-bearer, + travel(-ler), walk (abroad, on, to and fro, up and down, to
places), wander, wax, (way-)faring man, X be weak, whirl.]
1). I believe that Satan’s answer
is incomplete and that two Scriptures from the New Testament are needed to be
included to complete his answer.
a). John 10:10 The thief cometh
not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy:
b). 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be
vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about,
seeking whom he may devour.
2). In light of this, the dialogue would
go like this: Satan: From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up
and down in it for to steal and to kill and to destroy, and seeking whom I may
devour. The working out of these purposes is clearly seen in the last half of Job
1.
a). Job 1:13-19 And there was a
day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their
eldest brother's house:
14 And there came a messenger unto
Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
15 And the Sabeans fell upon them,
and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the
sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
16 While he was yet speaking,
there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath
burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped
alone to tell thee.
17 While he was yet speaking,
there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell
upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with
the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
18 While he was yet speaking,
there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and
drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
19 And, behold, there came a great
wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell
upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell
thee.
