But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

1. “But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb…”

a. But [Strong: 1161. de deh a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. [it is] happened [Strong: 4819. sumbaino soom-bah'-ee-no from 4862 and the base of 939; to walk (figuratively, transpire) together, i.e. concur (take place):--be(-fall), happen (unto).]

c. [unto] them [Strong: 846 autos ow-tos' from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

d. according to the [Strong: 3588. [to] ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [Thayer: [to] ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. T.]

e. true [Strong: 227. alethes al-ay-thace' from 1 (as a negative particle) and 2990; true (as not concealing):--true, truly, truth.] [Zodhiates: True, real, conformed to the nature and reality of things.]

b. proverb [Strong: paroimia par-oy-mee'-ah from a compound of 3844 and perhaps a derivative of 3633; apparently a state alongside of supposition, i.e. (concretely) an adage; specially, an enigmatical or fictitious illustration:--parable, proverb.]

1). Actually there are two proverbs cited, that of the dog, and that of the sow.

2. “…The dog is turned to his own vomit again…” 

a. [The] dog [Strong: 2965. kuon koo'-ohn a primary word; a dog ("hound") (literally or figuratively):--dog.]

b. [is] turned...again [Strong: 1994. epistrepho ep-ee-stref'-o from 1909 and 4762; to revert (literally, figuratively or morally):--come (go) again, convert, (re-)turn (about, again).]

c. to [Strong: 1909. epi ep-ee' a primary preposition; properly, meaning superimposition (of time, place, order, etc.), as a relation of distribution (with the genitive case), i.e. over, upon, etc.; of rest (with the dative case) at, on, etc.; of direction (with the accusative case) towards, upon, etc.:--about (the times), above, after, against, among, as long as (touching), at, beside, X have charge of, (be-, (where-))fore, in (a place, as much as, the time of, -to), (because) of, (up-)on (behalf of), over, (by, for) the space of, through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), with. In compounds it retains essentially the same import, at, upon, etc. (literally or figuratively).]

e. his own [Strong: 2398. idios id'-ee-os of uncertain affinity; pertaining to self, i.e. one's own; by implication, private or separate:--X his acquaintance, when they were alone, apart, aside, due, his (own, proper, several), home, (her, our, thine, your) own (business), private(-ly), proper, severally, their (own).]

f. vomit [Strong: 1829. exerama ex-er'-am-ah from a comparative of 1537 and a presumed erao (to spue); vomit, i.e. food disgorged:--vomit.]

1). This Proverb is found in Proverbs. 

1). Proverbs 26:11 As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.

2). Adam Clarke Commentary: Here is a sad proof of the possibility of falling from grace, and from very high degrees of it too. These had escaped from the contagion that was in the world; they had had true repentance, and cast up "their sour sweet morsel of sin;" they had been washed from all their filthiness, and this must have been through the blood of the Lamb; yet, after all, they went back, got entangled with their old sins, swallowed down their formerly rejected lusts, and re-wallowed in the mire of corruption. It is no wonder that God should say, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning: reason and nature say it must be so; and Divine justice says it ought to be so; and the person himself must confess that it is right that it should be so. But how dreadful is this state! How dangerous when the person has abandoned himself to his old sins!

3. “…and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.”

a. and [Strong: 2532 kai kahee  apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. [the] sow [Strong: 5300. hus hoos apparently a primary word; a hog 
("swine"):--sow.]

c. [that was] washed [Strong: 3068. louo loo'-o a primary verb; to bathe (the whole person; whereas 3538 means to wet a part only, and 4150 to wash, cleanse garments exclusively):--wash.]

d. to [Strong: 1519. eis ice a primary preposition; to or into (indicating the point reached or entered), of place, time, or (figuratively) purpose (result, etc.); also in adverbial phrases:--(abundant-)ly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in (among, at, unto, -so much that, -to), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), ...ward, (where-)fore, with. Often used in composition with the same general import, but only with verbs (etc.) expressing motion (literally or figuratively).]

e. [her] wallowing [Strong: 2946. kulisma koo'-lis-mah from 2947; a wallow (the effect of rolling), i.e. filth:--wallowing.]

f. [in the] mire [Strong: 1004. borboros bor'-bor-os of uncertain derivation; mud:--mire.]

1). This proverb is not found in the Old Testament but is found in Rabbinic writings. The person who returns to his old self is described as a dog eating its own vomit or a pig after it has been washed and cleaned to going back to wallowing in the mud.
