Galatians 5:20
Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance,
emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
a. witchcraft
[5331 * pharmakeia][Strong: from [farmakeuV] - pharmakeus 5332;
medication, ("pharmacy"), i.e. (by extension) magic (literally or
figuratively):--sorcery, witchcraft.][Thayer: the use or the administering of
drugs, poisoning, sorcery, magical arts, often found in connection with
idolatry and fostered by it, metaph. the deceptions and seductions of idolatry.] [Zodhiates:
Pharmakeia means the occult, sorcery, witchcraft, illicit pharmaceuticals,
trance, magical incantations.]
Drugs
A. Creation
1. God created
the earth and everything in it, but some of His creation is not in its original
created state.
a. The animal
kingdom was created as vegetarian, but now some are carnivorous.
1). Genesis
1:29, 30 And God
said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face
of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding
seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30 And to every
beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that
creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb
for meat: and it was so.
b. After God
created the plant kingdom He approved it and said it was good.
1). Genesis
1:11, 12 And God
said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit
tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth:
and it was so.
12 And the earth
brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree
yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it
was good.
2). Before the
fall of man rose bushes did not have thorns.
B. The Fall of man
1. Adam given
dominion over the earth.
a. Genesis
1:26-28 And God
said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have
dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the
cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth
upon the earth.
27 So God
created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and
female created he them.
28 And God
blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish
the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over
the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
2. The Fall was
treason
a. Direct
command:
1). Genesis
2:16, 17 And the Lord God
commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17 But of the
tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the
day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
b. Direct
disobedience:
1). Genesis 3:6 And
when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to
the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit
thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
c. Act of
obedience and service to Satan:
1). Romans 6:16 Know
ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are
to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
d. Satan became
the god of this world:
1). 2
Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them
which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the
image of God, should shine unto them.
C. The Curse
1. Notice when the
serpent is cursed along with the whole animal kingdom, the serpent got the
worst of it.
a. Genesis 3:14 And
the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou
art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly
shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
2. In Isaiah there
is a picture of the curse being lifted off the animal kingdom during the
Millennial reign of Christ. Although the carnivorous natures and poisons are
removed, the serpent still has to crawl to get around, that part will never be
removed.
a. Isaiah 11:6-9
The wolf also shall
dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf
and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead
them.
7 And the cow
and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion
shall eat straw like the ox.
8 And the
sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put
his hand on the cockatrice' den.
9 They shall not
hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the
knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.
3. It is here that carnivorous natures began:
a. Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one
man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all
men, for that all have sinned:
b. Romans 3:13 Their
throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the
poison of asps is under their lips:
4. Here the perverted
effects on plant kingdom began also:
a. Genesis 3:17,
18And unto Adam he
said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of
the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed
is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy
life;
18 Thorns also
and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the
field;
5. The earth and
animals in mourning because of sin:
a. Hosea 4:2, 3 By swearing, and lying, and
killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood
toucheth blood.
3 Therefore
shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with
the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the
sea also shall be taken away.
b. Romans 8:22 For
we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until
now.
D. Drugs in Scripture
1. Genesis
30:14-18 And Reuben
went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and
brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray
thee, of thy son's mandrakes.
15 And she said
unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest
thou take away my son's mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie
with thee to night for thy son's mandrakes.
16 And Jacob
came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said,
Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee with my son's
mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
17 And God
hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bare Jacob the fifth son.
18 And Leah said,
God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and
she called his name Issachar.
a. mandrakes
[1736 * duwday][Strong: a boiler or
basket; also the mandrake (as an aphrodisiac):--basket, mandrake.][Gesenius: mandrake,
love-apple, as exciting sexual desire, and favouring procreation.]
2. Septuagint (Greek
Old Testament) Exodus 7:22 And the charmers also of the Egyptians did so with
their sorceries; and the heart of Pharao was hardened, and he did not hearken
to them, even as the Lord said.
