Colossians 1:13


Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.

1. “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness…”


a. Who [3739 * hos] [Strong: including feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]


b. delivered [4506 * rhoumai] [Strong: middle voice of an obsolete verb, akin to 4482 (through the idea of a current; compare 4511); to rush or draw (for oneself), i.e. rescue:--deliver(-er).][Zodhiates: To draw or snatch from danger, rescue, deliver.]


c. us [2248 * hemas] [Strong: accusative case plural of 1473; us:--our, us, we.]

h. [of] darkness [4655 * skotos] [Strong: from the base of 4639; shadiness, i.e. obscurity (literally or figuratively):--darkness.] [Zodhiates: spiritual darkness, implying ignorance or error.]


1). The power and authority that this verse speaks of that we have been delivered from first began because of the fall of Adam and Eve in the garden and from that time all of their descendants have been under the authority of the devil.


a). Romans 5:12  Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:


b). Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?


2). And because we were under the devil’s authority mankind obeyed his will.


a). Ephesians 2:2, 3 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.


3). Because of what Jesus accomplished for us and us receiving and declaring his Lordship, we take part in being delivered from Satan’s power and authority.


a). Romans 10:9, 10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.


b). John 1:12, 13 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

1:13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.


2. “…and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.”

1). Because I received what Christ Jesus did for me and freely offered to me, I have been removed from under the lordship of the devil and I have been transported into the kingdom of Christ Jesus.
