Ezekiel 3:1


Ezekiel 3:1

Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel.

1. “Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest…”

a. 2. “…eat this roll…”

c. roll [Strong: 4039 mᵉgillâh, meg-il-law'; from 1556; a roll:--roll, volume.] [AMG, Complete Old Testament Word Study Dictionary: A feminine noun meaning roll, volume, writing, scroll. The Hebrew word is approximately equivalent to the English word “book”.]

1). The theme of eating the word of eating the word of God used as a metaphor for obedience is consistent throughout the Scripture, beautifully woven into the word.

a). Isaiah 55:1-3 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
55:2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
55:3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

b). 1 Peter 2:1-3 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
2:3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

c). Proverbs 24:13, 14  My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:
24:14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

d). Job 23:12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
  
2). Immediately after Ezekiel was commanded to eat the scroll he was told to speak to the house of Israel.

3. “…and go speak unto the house of Israel.”

a. 1). Blue Letter Bible says this word is translated “speak” 840 times. As God was sending Ezekiel to speak to Israel, the LORD warned him that they would not listen.

a). Ezekiel 3:4-9 And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with my words unto them.
3:5 For thou art not sent to a people of a strange speech and of an hard language, but to the house of Israel;
3:6 Not to many people of a strange speech and of an hard language, whose words thou canst not understand. Surely, had I sent thee to them, they would have hearkened unto thee.
3:7 But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee; for they will not hearken unto me: for all the house of Israel are impudent and hardhearted.
3:8 Behold, I have made thy face strong against their faces, and thy forehead strong against their foreheads.
3:9 As an adamant harder than flint have I made thy forehead: fear them not, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.
