And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

1. “And the Philistine drew near morning and evening…”

1). The number forty is a significant number in the Scripture and usually implies testing. 

a). It rained for 40 days and nights.

(1) Genesis 7:12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

b). Moses fasted 40 days and nights.

(1) Exodus 34:28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

c). Elijah fasted 40 days.

(1) 1 Kings 19:8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

d). Jesus fasted 40 days.

(1) Matthew 4:1, 2 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

4:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

e). Israel wandered 40 years in the wilderness.

(1) Numbers 14:30-34 Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

14:31 But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.

14:32 But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.

14:33 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.

14:34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
