e. [of the] LORD [Strong: 3068 Yhovah yeh-ho-vaw' from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]
1). Because of this Scripture, it is believed by some that there were two lines of the human family. The ungodly line of Cain, and the righteous line of Seth. Problems with this are:
a). Adam had more than two sons: Genesis 5:4.
b). Seth’s line is mentioned in Genesis 5 to show the branch of the race that the seed of the woman descended through, not to show a godly line.
c). There is a Messianic line, but as far as being
godly, this line falls short.
d). True worship of God did not begin with Enos, it was already established: Genesis 3:21; 4:4; Hebrew 11:4.
2). The margin reads: “…men began to call themselves by the name of the LORD”.
a). Jewish sources say that men quit praying to God and used His name for their idols and attached His name to their gods. One Jewish source, the Targum of Jonathan, says, “That was the generation in whose days they began to err, and to make to themselves idols, and surnamed their idols by the name of the LORD.
b). A good example is in Moses day is Exodus 32:2-5.
c). Ruckman: The Jewish theory has a strong point in its favor. Enoch in Genesis 5:21 is prophesying against an ungodly generation of sensual apostates, Jude 14, and it could be these who are mentioned in Genesis 4:26.
