And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

1. “And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.”

1). The reason God chose Mary is because she was a very godly woman and certainly no spiritual slouch. We can look at her prayer and know that she had a deep knowledge of the Abrahamic and Mosaic Covenants. She was a good choice for the woman to bear and raise the mother of Jesus.


a). Luke 1:46-55  And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

1:47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

1:48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

1:49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

1:50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

1:51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

1:52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

1:53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

1:54 He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

1:55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. 


2). Not to take away from this once in an eternity experience bestowed upon Mary, being raised Catholic, I must address the unfortunate made up prayer the Hail Mary. The made up  and blasphemous prayer the Hail Mary comes from a segment of this verse [Luke 1:28] and another segment is taken from Luke 1:42. The segment from this verse is Hail [Mary] full of grace [endued with grace] the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.” Another segment of the prayer is found in Luke 1:42 in Elisabeth’s words to Mary at the hearing of Mary's salutation. “Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.” It is after this that the humanly made up “prayer” enters into blasphemy. It finishes with these words. Holy Mary Mother of God pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death Amen. Though it contains segments of Scripture it is not a scriptural prayer. 


a). Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women,

And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.


b). At the Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D. Mary was declared the Mother of God. Ironically it was in the same city where the mother-goddess Diana was worshiped. 


3). After considering the use of similar words in Syriac, Greek and Latin in the 6th century, Herbert Thurston, writing in the Catholic Encyclopedia concludes that "there is little or no trace of the Hail Mary as an accepted devotional formula before about 1050” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H ail_Mary 


4). The official prayer of the “Ave Maria” was not finalized until after the publication of the Catechism of the Council of Trent and the prayer was then included in the Roman Breviary of 1568.
