1). I am persuaded to believe that this phrase, “born of water” refers to the word of God “and of the Spirit”, refers to “the washing of regeneration”, mentioned in Titus, and also  “water” of being washed with pure water of obedience in the word of God. It also includes to what Peter wrote in his first epistle


a). Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost,


b). Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.


c). 1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.

Institute of Creation Research, Days of Praise, 1/3/2011: Nicodemus was confused that night when Jesus first spoke of the necessity of the new birth and then equated it with the symbol of baptism. Christ then indicated that the reality in both was the supernatural work of God, the Holy Spirit. "Except a man be born of water |that is, the Spirit|, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God |with 'and' understood as 'even'|". The miracle of regeneration is thus a work of the Spirit, and just as "the wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit" (John 3:8). It is not some soul-winning methodology, but the Holy Spirit who does the work, and He (like the invisible wind) may work in a great variety of different ways. This work of the Holy Spirit in bringing salvation to the unsaved is so great and so complex that it must be described in a variety of figures to convey the whole reality. In the first place, He must bring conviction of sin and the need of salvation. "When he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment" (John 16:8). Then, as the sinner repents and believes on Christ, the Spirit baptizes him into Christ. "For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body" (1 Corinthians 12:13). As a member of Christ's body, he is made a partaker of His resurrection life. Simultaneously, "after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise" (Ephesians 1:13), and "the Spirit of God dwelleth in you" (1 Corinthians 3:16). All of this becomes the mighty miracle of spiritual birth. "According to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost" (Titus 3:5). HMM


2). Institute of Creation Research, Days of Praise 7/24/2023  John 3:16, the most quoted Bible verse in history, is declared by our Lord Jesus Christ at a private meeting with Nicodemus, a “ruler of the Jews” (John 3:1) who was a key member of the Pharisees (John 7:47-50). If you only focus on the famous words “for God so loved the world,” the rich color of our Lord’s point is entirely missed. Nicodemus also missed Christ’s point, asking, “How can these things be?” (John 3:9). The great prophet Ezekiel has the answer: “For I will take you [future restored Israel]…[and] sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean….A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit….and [I will] cause you to walk in my statutes” (Ezekiel 36:24-27). Having New Covenant implications with Israel’s future conversion, this passage clearly describes anyone in the kingdom who repents and trusts in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. In fact, unless the Lord transforms our hardened hearts, we cannot be in His kingdom. The water and Spirit point to the hidden work of the Holy Spirit (who’s like the blowing wind, John 3:8) in producing cleansed and renewed hearts (1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 5:26; Titus 3:5). After Nicodemus asked, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered, “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18). That evening, Nicodemus walked away undecided and unchanged. What’s your response to our Lord’s urgent call? CM
