1). In the previous chapter God had already said that the seed would come from Abram’s own bowels, but he said nothing of Sarah’s involvement.

a). Genesis 15:4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

2). Harper’s Bible Commentary: Such substitute childbearing, reflected also in Genesis 30:1-13 was apparently an accepted social institution in the ancient Near East.

3). The Genesis Record, Henry Morris: “Just as Abram had been once willing to share her with other men…so she felt it necessary to share her husband with another woman as the only solution to their problem.”

4). After God spoke to Abram four times, the most powerful being the cutting of the Covenant in Genesis 15, there were no doubt discussion between Abram and Sarai about children. Before they had ever left Ur, Abram and Sarai were convinced she was unable to have children. They of course attributed it to God, I believe wrongly, but they probably tried many times for many years to no avail. Discussions then focused on an alternative plan, one that had nothing to do with God.

3. “…And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.”
