Genesis 18:16

Genesis 18:16

And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.

a. NLT: Then the men got up from their meal and looked out toward Sodom. As they left, Abraham went with them to send them on their way.

b. NIV: When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way.

c. YLT: And the men rise from thence, and look on the face of Sodom, and Abraham is going with them to send them away;

d. Amplified Bible: The men rose up from there and faced toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.

1. “And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom…”

a. the men [582 * ‘enowsh] [Strong: from 605; properly, a mortal (and thus differing from the more dignified 120); hence, a man in general (singly or collectively):--another, X (blood-)thirsty, certain, chap(-man); divers, fellow, X in the flower of their age, husband, (certain, mortal) man, people, person, servant, some ( X of them), + stranger, those, + their trade. It is often unexpressed in the English versions, especially when used in apposition with another word.]

2. ‘…and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.”

a. Abraham [85 * ‘Abraham] [Strong: contracted from 1 and an unused root (probably meaning to be populous); father of a multitude; Abraham, the later name of Abram:--Abraham.]

1). The plains of Mamre were located near present day Hebron, which is on the ridge of the mountains of Israel. It appears from the text that the whole plain of Jordan was visible from this vantage point.

a). Genesis 19:27, 28 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the Lord:
19:28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
