Philippians 2:9
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a
name which is above every name:
a. NLT: Therefore, God elevated
him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names,
b. NIV: Therefore God exalted him
to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
c. YLT: wherefore, also, God did
highly exalt him, and gave to him a name thatis above every name,
d. Amplified Bible: For this
reason also [because He obeyed and so completely humbled Himself], God has
highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,
e. Worrell Translation: Wherefore
also God highly exalted Him and bestowed upon Him the name which is above every
name;
1. “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him,…”
a. wherefore [1352 * dio]
[Strong: from 1223 and 3739; through which thing, i.e. consequently:--for which
cause, therefore, wherefore.] [Wherefore
is a conjunction and joins what was said in the last sentence with what is said
here.]
b. God [2316 * theos] [Strong: of
uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity;
figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly,
-ward).]
c. also [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently,
a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force;
and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition)
with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or,
so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
1). Because God/Jesus humbled
himself, became man and went to the cross, God also highly exalted him. [There are two acts mentioned here. God
humbled himself, God exalted him, hence, the use of also].
d. hath highly exalted [5251 * huperupsoo]
[Strong: from 5228 and 5312; to elevate above others, i.e. raise to the highest
position:--highly exalt.]
e. him [846 * autos] [Strong: from
the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling
wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative
1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other
persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same,
((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves),
there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this
(man), those, together, very, which.]
2. “…and given him a name which is above every name:”
a. and [2532 * kai] [Strong: apparently,
a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force;
and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition)
with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or,
so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. given [5483 * charizomai] [Strong:
middle voice from 5485; to grant as a favor, i.e. gratuitously, in kindness,
pardon or rescue:--deliver, (frankly) forgive, (freely) give, grant.]
c. him [846 * autos] [Strong: from
the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling
wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative
1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other
persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same,
((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves),
there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this
(man), those, together, very, which.]
d. a name [3686 * onoma] [Strong: from
a presumed derivative of the base of 1097 (compare 3685); a "name"
(literally or figuratively) (authority, character):--called, (+ sur-)name(-d).]
e. which [3588 * ho, including
the feminine he, and the neuter to] [Strong: in all their inflections;
the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in
English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]
f. is above [5228 * huper] [Strong:
a primary preposition; "over", i.e. (with the genitive case) of
place, above, beyond, across, or causal, for the sake of, instead, regarding;
with the accusative case superior to, more than:--(+ exceeding, abundantly)
above, in (on) behalf of, beyond, by, + very chiefest, concerning, exceeding
(above, -ly), for, + very highly, more (than), of, over, on the part of, for
sake of, in stead, than, to(-ward), very. In the comparative, it retains many
of the above applications.]
g. every [3956 * pas] [Strong: including
all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all
(manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as
many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.]
h. name [3686 * onoma] See “name”
above.
1). Because of his exaltation, the
name of Jesus is above every name. “Far above all principality, and power, and
might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but
also in the world to come:” Jesus received his name by inheritance. The word “inheritance”
according to Webster’s means “the action of inheriting, something inherited”.
When you get something by inheritance, you receive it from both or one of your
parents. As the Scriptures clearly show, God was the one who named Jesus.
Joseph and Mary merely followed instructions.
a). Hebrews 1:4 Being made so much
better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent
name than they.
b). Luke 1:30-33. And the angel
said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God.
1:31 And, behold, thou shalt
conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
1:32 He shall be great, and shall
be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the
throne of his father David:
1:33 And he shall reign over the
house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
c). Matthew 1:20, 21 But while he [Joseph]
thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a
dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy
wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
1:21 And she shall bring forth a
son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from
their sins.
2). The name of
Jesus has been given to the Church to be used not only in prayer, but to use as
a weapon praying with authority over the devil.
a ). John 14:13,
14 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may
be glorified in the Son.
14:14 If ye shall
ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
b). Mark 16:15-18 And
he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every
creature.
16:16 He that
believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be
damned.
16:17 And these
signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils;
they shall speak with new tongues;
16:18They shall
take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them;
they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
3). One of the main
points of this passage the Apostle Paul is attempting to get across to us is the
link between humility and exaltation, so to see this more clearly I want to
combine verses 8 and 9 and then look at some other related verses. “And being
found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death,
even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and
given him a name which is above every name:”
4). Humility is an
attitude that Jesus ministered and lived out all through his life on earth.
Matthew 23:12 “And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that
humble himself shall be exalted.”
a). Luke 14:7-11 And he put forth
a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the
chief rooms; saying unto them,
14:8 When thou art bidden of any
man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man
than thou be bidden of him;
14:9 And he that bade thee and him
come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take
the lowest room.
14:10 But when thou art bidden, go
and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say
unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence
of them that sit at meat with thee.
14:11 For whosoever sxalteth
himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
b). Cp. Matthew 20:20-28.
5). Examples in the Epistles.
a). James 4:6-10 But he giveth
more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto
the humble.
4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to
God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he
will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts,
ye double minded.
4:9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and
weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
4:10 Humble yourselves in the
sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
(1) resist (498 * antitassomai;
anti-against; tasso-to arrange) To set oneself against.
(2) Wow! God will set himself
against us if we are prideful.
b). 1 Peter 5:5, 6 Likewise, ye
younger, submit tourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to
another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth
grace to the humble.
5:6 Humble yourselves under the
mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
