Genesis 16:5
And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have
given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was
despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.
a. NLT: Then
Sarai said to Abram, “This is all your fault! I put my servant into your arms,
but now that she’s pregnant she treats me with contempt. The LORD will
show who’s wrong—you or me!”
b. NIV: Then
Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put
my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me.
May the LORD judge between you and me.”
c. YLT: And Sarai saith unto
Abram, 'My violence is for thee; I -- I have given mine
handmaid into thy bosom, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and I am
lightly esteemed in her eyes; Jehovah doth judge between me and thee.'
d. Amplified Bible: Then
Sarai said to Abram, May [the responsibility for] my wrong and deprivation of rights be upon
you! I gave my maid into your bosom, and when she saw that she was with child,
I was contemptible and despised
in her eyes. May the Lord be the judge between you and me.
e. Septuagint: And
Sara said to Abram, I am injured by thee; I gave my handmaid into thy bosom,
and when I saw that she was with child, I was dishonoured before her. The Lord
judge between me and thee.
f. Stone Edition Chumash: So Sarai
said to Abram, “The outrage against me is due to you! It was I who gave my
maidservant into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I became
lowered in her esteem. Let HASHEM judge between me and you!”
1. “And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee…”

gain:--cruel(-ty), damage, false, injustice, X oppressor, unrighteous, violence
(against, done), violent (dealing), wrong.]
1). All of the translations agree,
the “wrong” was what happened to Sarai. According to the Hebrew text there was
an injustice done to Sarai by Hagar, and looking at the Hebrew definitions
quite possibly a physical altercation.
2. “…I have given my
maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in
her eyes…”
a. given [5414 * Nathan] [Strong: a
primitive root; to give, used with greatest latitude of application (put, make,
etc.):--add, apply, appoint, ascribe, assign, X avenge, X be ((healed)),

X take, thrust, trade, turn, utter, + weep, + willingly, + withdraw, + would
(to) God, yield.]
b. my maid [8198 * shiphchah] [Strong:
feminine from an unused root meaning to spread out (as a family; see 4940);
a female slave (as a member of the household):--(bond-, hand-)maid(-en,
-servant), wench, bondwoman, womanservant.]
c. into thy bosom [2436 * cheyq]
[Strong: from an unused root, apparently meaning to inclose; the bosom
(literally or figuratively):--bosom, bottom, lap, midst, within.]
d. and when she saw [7200 * ra’ah]
[Strong: a primitive root; to see, literally or figuratively (in numerous
applications, direct and implied, transitive, intransitive and
causative):--advise self, appear, approve, behold, X certainly, consider,
discern, (make to) enjoy, have experience, gaze, take heed, X indeed, X
joyfully, lo, look (on, one another, one on another, one upon another, out, up,
upon), mark, meet, X be near, perceive, present, provide, regard, (have)
respect, (fore-, cause to, let) see(-r, -m, one another), shew (self), X sight
of others, (e-)spy, stare, X surely, X think, view, visions.]
e. that she had conceived [2029 * harah]
[Strong: a primitive root; to be (or become) pregnant, conceive (literally or
figuratively):--been, be with child, conceive, progenitor.]
f. I was despised [7043 * qalal]
[Strong: a primitive root; to be (causatively, make) light, literally (swift,
small, sharp, etc.) or figuratively (easy, trifling, vile, etc.):--abate, make
bright, bring into contempt, (ac-)curse, despise, (be) ease(-y, -ier), (be a,
make, make somewhat, move, seem a, set) light(-en, -er, -ly, -ly afflict, -ly
esteem, thing), X slight(-ly), be swift(-er), (be, be more, make, re-)vile,
whet.]
g. in her eyes [5869 * ‘ayin]
[Strong: probably a primitive word; an eye (literally or figuratively); by
analogy, a fountain (as the eye of the landscape):--affliction, outward
appearance, + before, + think best, colour, conceit, + be content, countenance,
+ displease, eye((-brow), (-d), -sight), face, + favour, fountain, furrow (from
the margin), X him, + humble, knowledge, look, (+ well), X me, open(-ly), +
(not) please, presence, + regard, resemblance, sight, X thee, X them, + think,
X us, well, X you(-rselves).]
1). Surely there was much talk in
Abram’s household about the LORD God appearing to Abram and promising his seed dominion
of the whole land. It is probable that Hagar knew why this arrangement was
going on and when she got pregnant she began to feel superior to Sarai. Hey, it’s
going to be MY seed that is to be given this land. Again These are just some of
my thoughts. Again, looking at the Hebrew definitions for “wrong” it could have
been anything from just a showing and treatment of disrespect by Hagar toward
Sarai or possibly a physical altercation.
3. “…the LORD judge between me and thee.”
a.. the LORD [3068 * Yhovah]
[Strong: from 1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish
national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord.]
b. judge [8199 * shaphat] [Strong:
a primitive root; to judge, i.e. pronounce sentence (for or against); by
implication, to vindicate or punish; by extenssion, to govern; passively, to
litigate (literally or figuratively):--+ avenge, X that condemn, contend,
defend, execute (judgment), (be a) judge(-ment), X needs, plead, reason, rule.]
