e. of Sinai [Strong: 5514 * Ciynay see-nah'-ee of uncertain derivation; Sinai, mountain of Arabia:--Sinai.]

1). They arrived the first day of the third month, and they left Sinai on the 20th day in the second year, the second month. Israel stayed at Sinai approximately 10 days short of a year.

a). Numbers 10:11 And it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from off the tabernacle of the testimony.
10:12 And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.
10:13 And they first took their journey according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

2). There is a phrase that teaches that Israel kept going around the mountain, but that is not true. They were at Mount Sinai for almost a year then traveled much. It must be noted that the unbelief that resulted in the 40 year wandering occurred while they were camped at Paran (Numbers 12:16; 13:1-3) It is possible that Rithmah is located in Paran or is another name for Paran. The forty years begins at Paran and does not include the approximately 1½  years from the exodus to Paran.

a). Numbers 33:16-50 And they removed from the desert of Sinai, and pitched at Kibrothhattaavah.
33:17 And they departed from Kibrothhattaavah, and encamped at Hazeroth.
33:18 And they departed from Hazeroth, and pitched in Rithmah.
33:19 And they departed from Rithmah, and pitched at Rimmonparez.
33:20 And they departed from Rimmonparez, and pitched in Libnah.
33:21 And they removed from Libnah, and pitched at Rissah.
33:22 And they journeyed from Rissah, and pitched in Kehelathah.
33:23 And they went from Kehelathah, and pitched in mount Shapher.
33:24 And they removed from mount Shapher, and encamped in Haradah.
33:25 And they removed from Haradah, and pitched in Makheloth.
33:26 And they removed from Makheloth, and encamped at Tahath.
33:27 And they departed from Tahath, and pitched at Tarah.
33:28 And they removed from Tarah, and pitched in Mithcah.
33:29 And they went from Mithcah, and pitched in Hashmonah.
33:30 And they departed from Hashmonah, and encamped at Moseroth.
33:31 And they departed from Moseroth, and pitched in Benejaakan.
33:32 And they removed from Benejaakan, and encamped at Horhagidgad.
33:33 And they went from Horhagidgad, and pitched in Jotbathah.
33:34 And they removed from Jotbathah, and encamped at Ebronah.
33:35 And they departed from Ebronah, and encamped at Eziongaber.
33:36 And they removed from Eziongaber, and pitched in the wilderness of Zin, which is Kadesh.
33:37 And they removed from Kadesh, and pitched in mount Hor, in the edge of the land of Edom.
33:38 And Aaron the priest went up into mount Hor at the commandment of the Lord, and died there, in the fortieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the first day of the fifth month.
33:39 And Aaron was an hundred and twenty and three years old when he died in mount Hor.

(1) Within the fortieth year of their leaving Egypt, Aaron died. We must subtract the time getting to Sinai of 2 plus months (Exodus 19:1), add the time they were at Sinai Numbers 10:11, and the time it took to get to Paran where the forty years started.

33:40 And king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south in the land of Canaan, heard of the coming of the children of Israel.
(1) The war with Arad the Canaanite (Numbers 21:1-3).

33:41 And they departed from mount Hor, and pitched in Zalmonah.
33:42 And they departed from Zalmonah, and pitched in Punon.

(1) Possible place where Israel murmured against God and Moses. The place where the brazen serpent was made (Numbers 21:4-9).

33:43 And they departed from Punon, and pitched in Oboth.
33:44 And they departed from Oboth, and pitched in Ijeabarim, in the border of Moab.
33:45 And they departed from Iim, and pitched in Dibongad.
33:46 And they removed from Dibongad, and encamped in Almondiblathaim.
33:47 And they removed from Almondiblathaim, and pitched in the mountains of Abarim, before Nebo.
33:48 And they departed from the mountains of Abarim, and pitched in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.
33:49 And they pitched by Jordan, from Bethjesimoth even unto Abelshittim in the plains of Moab.

(1) After the battles with the Amorite kings Sihon and Og Israel moved to Abelshittim, on the west side of the Jordan river acrossed from Jericho (Numbers 22:1; Numbers 25:1).

3). The Biblical material of Exodus 12, the night of the Exodus from Egypt to Numbers 13 &14, the sending of the spies and subsequent unbelief and rebellion of Israel comprise a time period of about 1½ years. I also learned that the Biblical material from Numbers 22 to Joshua 3 comprises another time period of about 1½  years, which leaves the 7 chapters of Numbers 15-21 to fit in 38 ½ years. Inside those 7 chapters of Numbers is the rebellion of Korah in Numbers 16, the budding of Aaron’s rod in Numbers 17, signifying again that God chose Aaron and his sons in the Priesthood. In Numbers 20 is the disobedience of Moses and Aaron in getting water out of the rock, for which disobedience neither enter into the Promised Land. In Numbers 21 is the episode of Israel’s complaining and the subsequent result of the death of many from serpent bites and the making of the brass serpent by Moses. Finally Numbers 21:20 records Israel getting to the top of Pisgah immediately before the military campaigns against Sihon and Og. These campaigns occurred approximately 1½ years before Israel went into the Promised Land. Other than those few historic Biblical events there is nothing recorded about those 38½ years. NOTHING!
