1 Thessalonians 3:7

Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith:

a. NLT: So we have been greatly encouraged in the midst of our troubles and suffering, dear brothers and sisters, because you have remained strong in your faith.

b. NIV: Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith.

    

c. YLT:  Because of this we were comforted, brethren, over you, in all our tribulation and necessity, through your faith,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: Brethren, for this reason, in [spite of all] our stress and crushing difficulties we have been filled with comfort and cheer about you [because of] your faith (the leaning of your whole personality on God in complete trust and confidence).

e. Worrell Translation: For this reason, brethren, we were comforted over you, in all our tribulation and distress, through your faith.

f. Wuest Translation: Because of this we were encouraged, brethren in your every distress and crushing affliction, this encouragement finding its source in your faith.

1. “Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith:”

a. Therefore [Strong: 1223 dia dee-ah' a primary preposition denoting the channel of an act; through (in very wide applications, local, causal, or occasional):--after, always, among, at, to avoid, because of (that), briefly, by, for (cause) ... fore, from, in, by occasion of, of, by reason of, for sake, that, thereby, therefore, X though, through(-out), to, wherefore, with (-in). c. brethren [Strong: 80 adephos ad-el-fos' from 1 (as a connective particle) and delphus (the womb); a brother (literally or figuratively) near or remote (much like 1):--brother.]

d. we were comforted [Strong: 3870 parakaleo par-ak-al-eh'-o from 3844 and 2564; to call near, i.e. invite, invoke (by imploration, hortation or consolation):--beseech, call for, (be of good) comfort, desire, (give) exhort(-ation), intreat, pray.] [Thayer: to call to one's side, call for, summon, to console, to encourage and strengthen by consolation, to comfort, to encourage, strengthen.]

e. over [Strong: 1909 epi ep-ee' a primary preposition; properly, meaning superimposition (of time, place, order, etc.), as a relation of distribution (with the genitive case), i.e. over, upon, etc.; of rest (with the dative case) at, on, etc.; of direction (with the accusative case) towards, upon, etc.:--about (the times), above, after, against, among, as long as (touching), at, beside, X have charge of, (be-, (where-))fore, in (a place, as much as, the time of, -to), (because) of, (up-)on (behalf of), over, (by, for) the space of, through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), with. i. our [Strong: 2257 hemon hay-mone' genitive case plural of 1473; of (or from) us:--our (company), us, we.]

j. affliction [Strong: 2347 thlipsis thlip'-sis from 2346; pressure (literally or figuratively):--afflicted(-tion), anguish, burdened, persecution, tribulation, trouble.]

k. and  [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

l. distress [Strong: 318 anagke an-ang-kay' from 303 and the base of 43; constraint (literally or figuratively); by implication, distress:--distress, must needs, (of) necessity(-sary), needeth, needful.]

m. by [Strong: 1223 dia dee-ah' a primary preposition denoting the channel of an act; through (in very wide applications, local, causal, or occasional):--after, always, among, at, to avoid, because of (that), briefly, by, for (cause) ... fore, from, in, by occasion of, of, by reason of, for sake, that, thereby, therefore, X though, through(-out), to, wherefore, with (-in). n. your [Strong: 5216 humon hoo-mone' genitive case of 5210; of (from or concerning) you:--ye, you, your (own, -selves).]

o. faith [Strong: 4102 pistis pis'-tis from 3982; persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself:--assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.]

1). The news that Timothy brought to Paul comforted, encouraged and strengthened him. It also had an effect on his ministering to the Corinthians.

a). Acts 18:5 And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.

2). I think the text shows that the arrival of Timothy affected Paul spiritually and emotionally.

a). pressed [Strong: 4912 sunecho soon-ekh'-o from 4862 and 2192; to hold together, i.e. to compress (the ears, with a crowd or siege) or arrest (a prisoner); figuratively, to compel, perplex, afflict, preoccupy:--constrain, hold, keep in, press, lie sick of, stop, be in a strait, straiten, be taken with, throng.] [Thayer: of being straitened or pressed in spirit, with desire, to hold together with constraint, to compress, to hold completely, to hold fast, metaphorically  to be held by, closely occupied with any business, in teaching the word.]

3). Some of the other translations shed similar light. The different translations show that Paul was affected in his spirit, by the Holy Ghost, by the arrival of Timothy, he was constrained and pressed with great desire to fully occupy himself in the word of God. Glory to God!

a). [New King James Version]  When Silas and Timothy had come from Macedonia, Paul was compelled by the Spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.

b). [New American Standard Bible] But when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul began devoting himself completely to the word, solemnly testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the *Christ.

c). [American Standard Version] But when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was constrained by the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.

d). [WEB: Noah Webster] And when Silas and Timothy had come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in spirit, and testified to the Jews, [that] Jesus [was] Christ.
