1 Thessalonians 5:19

1 Thessalonians 5:19

Quench not the Spirit.

a. NLT: Do not stifle the Holy Spirit.

b. NIV: Do not quench the Spirit.

c. YLT: The Spirit quench not;

d. Amplified Bible Classic: Do not quench (suppress or subdue) the [Holy] Spirit;

e. Worrell Translation: Quench not the Spirit.

f. Wuest Translation: Stop stifling and suppressing the Spirit.

1. “Quench not the Spirit.”

a. Quench [Strong: 4570 sbennumi sben'-noo-mee a prolonged form of an apparently primary verb; to extinguish (literally or figuratively):--go out, quench.]

1). Rick Renner 2/16/16 The word “quench” in this verse is taken from the Greek word sbennumi. The word sbennumi means to extinguish, smother, suppress, douse, put out, snuff out, or to quell. It most often means to extinguish a fire by dousing it with water. In some places, it means to evaporate or to dry up. There’s no doubt about what Paul is trying to tell us. If we ignore the Holy Spirit’s voice long enough and often enough, eventually we will become spiritually hardened and will no longer be able to hear Him when He does try to speak to us. It will be like His voice evaporates or dries up, and we will hear it no more.

b. not [Strong: 3361 me may a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas 3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas 3756 expects an affirmative one)) whether:--any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations.]

c. the Spirit [Strong: 4151 pneuma pnyoo'-mah from 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:--ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), mind.]

1). Here the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write not to quench the Spirit, or suppress the power of the Spirit in our life. In another letter the Spirit inspired Paul to write how not to grieve the Holy Spirit which also would suppress the power of the Spirit in my life.

a). Ephesians 4:25-32 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
4:27 Neither give place to the devil.
4:28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
4:31 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

b). Walking in the flesh will diminish our ability to hear from the Spirit of God, we  must as believers get the flesh out of our walks.
