2 Peter 1:2, 3

2 Peter 1:2

Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

a. NLT: May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.

b. NIV: Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

c. YLT: Grace to you, and peace be multiplied in the acknowledgement of God and of Jesus our Lord!

d. Amplified Bible Classic: May grace (God’s favor) and peace (which is perfect well-being, all necessary good, all spiritual prosperity, and freedom from fears and agitating passions and moral conflicts) be multiplied to you in [the full, personal, precise, and correct] knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

1. “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you…”

a. Grace [Strong: 5485 cháris, khar'-ece; graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude):--acceptable, benefit, favour, gift, grace(- ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank(-s, -worthy).] [Thayer: grace, that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness: grace of speech, good will, loving-kindness, favour, of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues, what is due to grace, the spiritual condition of one governed by the power of divine grace, the token or proof of grace, benefit, a gift of grace, benefit, bounty, thanks, (for benefits, services, favours), recompense, reward.]

1). In the context of these verses, the grace spoken of in 2 Peter 1:2 & 3 is the provision for everything in the New Covenant, EVERYTHING!

a). 2 Peter 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

b. and [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

c. peace [Strong: eirḗnē, i-ray'-nay; probably from a primary verb εἴρω eírō (to join); peace (literally or figuratively); by implication, prosperity:—one, peace, quietness, rest, +set at one again.]

d. [be] multiplied [Strong: 4129 plēthýnō, play-thoo'-no; from another form of G4128; to increase (transitively or intransitively):—abound, multiply. ] [Thayer: to increase, to multiply, to be increased, (be multiplied) multiply, to be increased, to multiply]

e. [to] you [Strong: 5213 hymîn, hoo-min'; irregular dative case of G5210; to (with or by) you:—ye, you, your(-selves).]

1). Tony Cook, Grace, the DNA of God writes: We are to profit from all of God’s word, even the hello’s and goodbyes! As you read the following salutations and benedictions, personalize them. Allow God to encourage and strengthen you from His grace.
a). “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Ccrist.” (This phrase occurs ten times in Romans 1:7; 1 Corinthians 1:3; 2 Corinthians 1:2; Galatians 1:3; Ephesians 1:2; Philippians 1:2; Colossians 1:2; 1 Thessalonians 1:1; 2 Thessalonians 1:2; and Philemon 3.)
b). “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.” (Similar variations of this phrase occur nine times in Romans 16:20, 24; 1 Corinthians 16:23; Galatians 6:18; Philippians 4:23; 1 Thessalonians 5:28; 2 Thessalonians 3:18; Philemon 25; and Revelations 22:21.)
c). “Grace be with you” (or you all). (This phrase occurs five times in Colossians 4:18; 1 Timothy 6:21; 2 Timothy 4:22; Titus 3:15; and Hebrews 13:25.)
d). “Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Similar variations of this phrase occur four times in 1 Timothy 1:2; 2 Timothy 1:2; Titus 1:4; and 2 John 3.)
e). “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (This phrase occurs in 2 Corinthians 13:14.)
f). “Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity.” (Ephesians 6:24.)
g). “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” (2 Peter 1:2.)
h). Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come.” (Revelation 1:4.)

2). It is clear from the New Testament Scriptures that God Himself desires for His New Covenant, born again people to receive grace [see definition above] and peace [see definition above] from God Himself. He wants us to be empowered by Him in every circumstance in life and at peace from Him in every situation in life.

2. “…through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,”

a. through [Strong: 1722 en; a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between G1519 and G1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:—about, after, against, + almost, × altogether, among, × as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (… sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), × mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, × outwardly, one, × quickly, × shortly, (speedi-)ly, × that, × there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.

b. [the] knowledge [Strong: 1922 epígnōsis, ep-ig'-no-sis; from G1921; recognition, i.e. (by implication) full discernment, acknowledgement:—(ac-)knowledge(-ing, - ment).] [Zodhiates: It is more intensive than gnosis, knowledge, because it expresses a more thorough participation in acquiring of knowledge on the part of the learner. In the NT, it often refers to knowledge which very powerfully influences the form of religious life, a knowledge laying claim to personal involvement.]

1). The knowledge mentioned in this verse is not just regular knowledge. It is a higher form of knowledge as the definition describes. It is revelation knowledge, knowledge imparted to our spirits by the Holy Spirit. There are two kinds of knowledge. There is natural knowledge, that is the knowledge we gain through the five physical senses. Then, there is revelation knowledge, knowledge gained only through a revelation of God’s Spirit to our human spirit. This is the knowledge that imparts faith and grace and everything we need in the New Covenant. It is not just having head knowledge about the Bible, head knowledge will not build faith and impart grace. Revelation knowledge is a deeper knowledge given to our spirits by the Holy Ghost.

a). 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

2). The level of the gospel we will be established in will be according to the revelation knowledge that we receive. It is this knowledge that will build us up and give us the inheritance that God wants us to have.

a). Romans 16:25 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,

b). Acts 20:32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

c. [of] God [Strong: 2316 theós, theh'-os; of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with G3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:—X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]

d. and [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

e. [of] Jesus [Strong: 2424 Iēsoûs, ee-ay-sooce'; of Hebrew origin (H3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites:—Jesus.]

f. our [Strong: 2257 hēmōn, hay-mone'; genitive case plural of G1473; of (or from) us:—our (company), us, we.]

2 Peter 1:3

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

a. ASV: Seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue;

b. YLT: As all things to us His divine power (the things pertaining unto life and piety) hath given, through the acknowledgement of him who did call us through glory and worthiness,

l. godliness [Strong: 2150 eusébeia, yoo-seb'-i-ah; from G2152; piety; specially, the gospel scheme:—godliness, holiness.]

1). He has given us everything we need to live a live in intimacy with Him and in godliness. The Word also says that power is able to give us abundantly above what we ask in prayer or even think.

a). Ephesians 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

2). He has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness, what an awesome promise. He is referring to the whole inheritance, everything he accomplished on the cross for us has been made available. But it comes through only one avenue, revelation knowledge.

2. “…through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:”

a. through [Strong: 1223 diá, dee-ah'; a primary preposition denoting the channel of an act; through (in very wide applications, local, causal, or occasional):—after, always, among, at, to avoid, because of (that), briefly, by, for (cause) … fore, from, in, by occasion of, of, by reason of, for sake, that, thereby, therefore, × though, through(-out), to, wherefore, with (-in).]

In the NT, it often refers to knowledge which very powerfully influences the form of religious life, a knowledge laying claim to personal involvement.]

1). As stated above, this knowledge was not just head knowledge, this was revelation knowledge, knowledge given by revelation of the Holy Spirit into the spirit of man.

a). Ephesians 1:15-23 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
1:16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

1:23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

b). Romans 16:25, 26 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,

j. virtue [Strong: 703 arétē, ar-et'-ay; from the same as G730; properly, manliness (valor), i.e. excellence (intrinsic or attributed):—praise, virtue.]

1). The Bible clearly says that God our Father desires us to grow up and into every promise provided in the New Covenant, provided to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He wants us to be “established”, “rooted and grounded” and “strong” in everything He wants us to have in the New Covenant.

2). The Holy Spirit can quicken spiritual truths in us, imparting revelation knowledge in our spirit, through a song about the Word, preaching of the Word, reading and studying the Word. One of the main ways though is through meditating the word of God.

a). Psalm 119:97-104   O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.
119:98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.
119:99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.
119:100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.
119:101 I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.
119:102 I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.
119:103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
119:104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

b). Proverbs 2:1-5 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
2:2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
2:3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
2:4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
2:5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

c). Proverbs 4:20-22 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
4:21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
4:22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

d). Wisdom, understanding, spiritual strength for obedience (grace), spiritual quickenings and physical health, all come from meditating the word of God.
