Romans 16:5

Romans 16:5

Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Salute my well-beloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ.

1. “Likewise greet the church that is in their house…”

a. Likewise [Strong: 2532 kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

1). Likewise, the firstfruits of the Old Covenant were shadows of images in the New Covenant, though all the references of firstfruits in the Old Covenant were offerings, none of the references in the New Testament had anything to do with money.

a). Hebrews 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

2). There are seven references to “firstfruits” in the New Testament and none of them refer to money or offerings, they all refer to people. One of the references refers to the blessings of the Spirit of God.

a). Romans 8:23; 16:5; 1 Corinthians 15:20; 15:23; 16:15; James 1:18; Revelation 14:4.

3).  Kenneth E. Hagin, in his book, The Midas Touch, A Balanced Approach to Biblical Prosperity, said this about the firstfruits. “Making a New Testament application of Old Testament technicalities violates every principle of Bible interpretation, especially when there isn’t a single New Testament usage of the word “firstfruits” in the context in which it is being preached by some ministers. The concept of firstfruits is not used in the New Testament in reference to financial giving. There is not even the vaguest hint of it by any New Testament writer in reference to money or the support of ministers.”
