And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.

2. “...but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.”

a. [but his] servant [Strong: 8334 sharath shaw-rath' a primitive root; to attend as a menial or worshipper; figuratively, to contribute to:--minister (unto), (do) serve(- ant, -ice, -itor), wait on.] [Word Study of the Old Testament AMG: A verb meaning to minister, to serve. This Hebrew word was utilized in a generic sense to describe various activities, including that of a domestic servant serving a ranking official (Genesis 39:4; 2 Samuel 13:17, 18); a chief assistant to an authority figure, such as Joshua was to Moses (Exodus 24:13); the angelic host to God (Psalm 103:21); and assistants to kings Isaiah 60:10). More particularly, the word is used in the context of religious service before the Lord, such as that required of the priests (Exodus 28:35; 1 Kings 8:11); or Levites (Numbers 3:6).]

1). This Hebrew word is also used to describe the relationship between Elisha and Elijah. Elisha ministered to Elijah.

a). 1 Kings 19:19-21 So Elijah left there and found Elisha son of Shaphat, whose plowing was being done with twelve yoke of oxen, and he drove the twelfth. Elijah crossed over to him and cast his mantle upon him.

19:20 He left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, Let me kiss my father and mother, and then I will follow you. And he [testing Elisha] said, Go on back. What have I done to you? [Settle it for yourself.]

19:21 So Elisha went back from him. Then he took a yoke of oxen, slew them, boiled their flesh with the oxen’s yoke [as fuel], and gave to the people, and they ate. Then he arose, followed Elijah, and served him.

b. Joshua [Strong: 3091 Yhowshuwa` yeh-ho-shoo'-ah or Yhowshua {yeh-ho-shoo'-ah}; from 3068 and 3467; Jehovah-saved; Jehoshua (i.e. Joshua), the Jewish leader:--Jehoshua, Jehoshuah, Joshua.]

e. [a] young man [Strong: 5288 na`ar nah'-ar from 5287; (concretely) a boy (as active), from the age of infancy to adolescence; by implication, a servant; also (by interch. of sex), a girl (of similar latitude in age):--babe, boy, child, damsel (from the margin), lad, servant, young (man).]

f. departed [Strong: 4185 muwsh moosh a primitive root (perhaps rather the same as 4184 through the idea of receding by contact); to withdraw (both literally and figuratively, whether intransitive or transitive):--cease, depart, go back, remove, take away.]

1). The first time we hear about Joshua was at the battle of Rephidim with the Amalekites (Exodus 17:8-13). From that day forward Joshua was Moses' right hand man. He even took Joshua up with him to receive the Ten Commandments (Exodus 24:12-14). Joshua, because of his faithfulness was eventually elevated to take Moses' place.
