And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

1. “And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.”

a. And [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

h. [some] believed not [Strong: 569. apisteo ap-is-teh'-o from 571; to be unbelieving, i.e. (transitively) disbelieve, or (by implication) disobey:--believe not.]

1). Benson Commentary: And some believed the things which were spoken — Were happily persuaded of the truth of Paul’s doctrine, and were induced to embrace Christianity; and some — On the other hand, were so much under the influence of strong prejudice and hardened, that they believed not — But rejected the gospel, amidst all the evidence which Paul advanced to support it.

2). Paul was not just any rabbi converted to the New Covenant. This was an individual who surpassed many of his contemporaries because he was more hungry for the things of Judaism.

a). Galatians 1:14 [NKJV]  And I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

b). Galatians 1:14 [CSB] I advanced in Judaism beyond many contemporaries among my people, because I was extremely zealous for the traditions of my ancestors.

c). Galatians 1:14 [NET] I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my nation, and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my ancestors.

3). What we see here is a playing out of the parable of the sower. In fact, when Paul saw how these leaders responded to his words, he cited the same words Jesus did when explaining how some respond to the message of the gospel.

a). Matthew 13:10-17  And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

13:12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

13:15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

13:17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
