Torah/Prophets/Writings: And he entreated Abram well for her sake, and he acquired
sheep, cattle, donkeys, slaves, and maidservants, female donkeys, and camels.
1. “And he entreated Abram well for her sake…”
a. entreated…well [3190 * yatab][Strong:
to be (causative) make well, literally
(sound, beautiful) or figuratively (happy, successful, right):--be accepted,
amend, use aright, benefit, be (make) better, seem best, make cheerful, be
comely, + be content, diligent(-ly), dress, earnestly, find favour, give, be
glad, do (be, make) good((-ness)), be (make) merry, please (+ well), shew more
(kindness), skilfully, X very small, surely, make sweet, thoroughly, tire,
trim, very, be (can, deal, entreat, go, have) well (said, seen).]
b. Abram [87 * 'Abram] [Strong:
contracted from 48; high father; Abram, the original name of
Abraham:--Abram.]
2. “…and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and
menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.”
a. he had sheep [6629 * tso'n]
[Strong: from an unused root meaning to migrate; a collective name for a flock
(of sheep or goats); also figuratively (of men):--(small) cattle, flock (+ -s),
lamb (+ -s), sheep((-cote, -fold, -shearer, -herds)).]
b. and oxen [1241 * baqar]
[Strong: from 1239; beef cattle or an animal of the ox family of either
gender (as used for plowing); collectively, a herd:-- beeve, bull (+ -ock), +
calf, + cow, great (cattle), + heifer, herd, kine, ox.]
c. he asses [2543 * chamowr or (shortened)
chamor] [Strong: from 2560; a male ass (from its dun red):--(he)ass.]
d. and menservants [5650 * `ebed]
[Strong: from 5647; a servant:--X bondage, bondman, (bond-)servant,
(man-)servant.]
e. and maidservants [8198 * shiphchah]
[Strong: feminine from an unused root meaning to spread out (as a family; see 4940);
a female slave (as a member of the household):--(bond-, hand-)maid(-en,
-servant), wench, bondwoman, womanservant.]
1). It is generally accepted that
one of the maidservants was Hagar.
a). Genesis 16:1 Now Sarai Abram's
wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was
Hagar.
f. she asses [860 * 'athown] [Strong:
probably from the same as 386 (in the sense of patience); a female
donkey (from its docility):--(she) ass.]
g. and camels [1581 * gamal]
[Strong: apparently from 1580 (in the sense of labor or
burden-bearing); a camel:--camel.]
1). It is interesting to note that
in going down to Egypt out of God’s will, Abram acquired more wealth but also
acquired Hagar, whose union with Abram produced Ishmael, which over three thousand
years later will help produce Armageddon.
