Joshua, Captain under
Moses
1.
The first mention of Joshua is after Israel crossed the Red Sea; Moses appoints
him commander of Israel’s forces against
Amalek. Joshua was successful only with the help of intercession from Aaron and
Hur holding up Moses’ hands.
a.
Exodus
17:8-13 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out
men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the
hill with the rod of God in mine hand.
So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and
fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
And it came to pass, when Moses held up his
hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a
stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up
his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his
hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people
with the edge of the sword.
b. From that day forward Joshua was Moses
right hand man. When Moses went up on the mount to receive the law, he took
Joshua with him.
1). Exodus 24:12-14 And the LORD said unto
Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables
of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest
teach them.
And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua:
and Moses went up into the mount of God.
And he said unto the elders, Tarry ye here
for us, until we come again unto you: and, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you:
if any man have any matters to do, let him come unto them.
2). The Scripture in Exodus 24:13 refers to
Joshua as Moses’ minister, that is the individual who waited upon him and
ministered to him. He is also called that in Joshua.
1). Joshua 1:1 Now after the death of Moses
the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the
son of Nun, Moses' minister, saying,
2.
Joshua was one of the 12 spies sent out to spy on the inhabitants of the
Promised Land.
a. Numbers 13:1-16 And the LORD spake unto
Moses, saying,
Send thou men, that they may search the land
of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their
fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.
And Moses by the commandment of the LORD sent
them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of
Israel.
And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua
the son of Zaccur.
Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of
Hori.
Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of
Jephunneh.
Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of
Joseph.
Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of
Nun.
Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of
Raphu.
Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of
Sodi.
Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe
of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.
Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of
Gemalli.
Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of
Michael.
Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of
Vophsi.
Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
These are the names of the men which Moses
sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.
b. Joshua was only one of two of the 12 spies
who gave a faithful, that is a faith filled account of their trip.
1). Numbers 14:6-9 And Joshua the son of Nun,
and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent
their clothes:
And they spake unto all the company of the
children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is
an exceeding good land.
If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring
us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither
fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is
departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.
3.
Later, Joshua was promoted to a higher responsibility because of his
faithfulness.
a. Numbers 27:18-23 And the LORD said unto
Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay
thine hand upon him;
And set him before Eleazar the priest, and
before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.
And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon
him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.
And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest,
who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the LORD: at
his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and
all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.
And Moses did as the LORD commanded him: and
he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the
congregation:
And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him
a charge, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.
4.
After Moses death, the reins of leadership were passed to Joshua.
a. Deuteronomy 34:7-9 And Moses was an
hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural
force abated.
And the children of Israel wept for Moses in
the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of weeping and mourning for Moses
were ended.
And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the
spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of
Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.
