e. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: David and the officers of the service corps set aside the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthum who prophesied while using harps and Lyres, and cymbals. Their number, in accordance with the number of workmen required for their service, was:

2. “...who should prophesy with harps, with psalteries, and with cymbals…”
a. [who should] prophesy [5012 nâbâʼ, naw-baw'; a primitive root; to prophesy, i.e. speak (or sing) by inspiration (in prediction or simple discourse):—prophesy(-ing), make self a prophet.]
b. prophesy [Strong: 5030 nâbîyʼ, naw-bee'; from H5012; a prophet or (generally) inspired man:—prophecy, that prophesy, prophet.]
1). Matthew Henry Commentary: To prophesy, in this place, means praising God with great earnestness and devout affections, under the influences of the Holy Spirit.
a). Psalms 49:4 I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.
b). 2 Kings 3:15 But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him.
2). Dake: This perhaps refers only to the sacred singing and inspirational music, not necessarily to the predicting of future events. In 1 Corinthians 14:3 prophesying is said to be speaking to men to edification, exhortation, and comfort. Here, this was accomplished by singing and music (v. 1). This seems to be thus explained in v 3 as giving thanks and praising God with music and singing.
3). Scripture declares that God inhabits the praises of his people. To inhabit speaks of presence.
a). Psalm 22:3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
(1) [O thou that] inhabitest [Strong: 3427 yashab yaw-shab' a primitive root; properly, to sit down (specifically as judge. in ambush, in quiet); by implication, to dwell, to remain; causatively, to settle, to marry:--(make to) abide(-ing), continue, (cause to, make to) dwell(-ing), ease self, endure, establish, X fail, habitation, haunt, (make to) inhabit(-ant), make to keep (house), lurking, X marry(-ing), (bring again to) place, remain, return, seat, set(- tle), (down-)sit(-down, still, -ting down, -ting (place) -uate), a). take, tarry.] [Gesenius: to dwell, remain, sit, abide.]
b). Psalm 32:7 Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.
c). 1 Samuel 16:14-23 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
16:15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.L
16:16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
16:17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
16:18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
16:19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.
16:20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
16:21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
16:22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
16:23And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
