Hebrews 4:1

Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

a. ASV: Let us fear therefore, lest haply, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it.

  

b. YLT: We may fear, then, lest a promise being left of entering into His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short,

d. Amplified Bible Classic: Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still holds and is offered [today], let us be afraid [to distrust it], lest any of you should think he has come too late and has come short of [reaching] it.

1. “Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest…”

a. [Let us] therefore [Strong: 3767 oûn, oon; apparently a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly:—and (so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily, wherefore.]

b. fear [Strong: 5399 phobéō, fob-eh'-o; from G5401; to frighten, i.e. (passively) to be alarmed; by analogy, to be in awe of, i.e. revere:—be (+ sore) afraid, fear (exceedingly), reverence.] [Thayer: to terrify, frighten, to put to flight by terrifying, to be struck with fear, to be seized with alarm, to reverence, venerate, to treat with deference or reverential obedience:]

c. lest [Strong: 3379 mḗpote, may'-pot-eh; from G3361 and G4218; not ever; also if (or lest) ever (or perhaps):—if peradventure, lest (at any time, haply), not at all, whether or not.]

d. [a] promise [Strong: 1860 epangelía, ep-ang-el-ee'-ah; from G1861; an announcement (for information, assent or pledge; especially a divine assurance of good):—message, promise.]

e. being left [Strong: 2641 kataleípō, kat-al-i'-po; from G2596 and G3007; to leave down, i.e. behind; by implication, to abandon, have remaining:—forsake, leave, reserve.]

  

g. [us of] entering [Strong: 1525 eisérchomai, ice-er'-khom-ahee; from G1519 and G2064; to enter (literally or figuratively):—X arise, come (in, into), enter in(-to), go in (through).]

2. “...any of you should seem to come short of it.”

d. should seem [Strong: 1380 dokéō, dok-eh'-o; a prolonged form of a primary verb, δόκω dókō dok'-o (used only in an alternate in certain tenses; compare the base of G1166) of the same meaning; to think; by implication, to seem (truthfully or uncertainly):—be accounted, (of own) please(-ure), be of reputation, seem (good), suppose, think, trow.]

e. [to] come short of it [Strong: 5302 hysteréō, hoos-ter-eh'-o; from G5306; to be later, i.e. (by implication) to be inferior; generally, to fall short (be deficient):—come behind (short), be destitute, fail, lack, suffer need, (be in) want, be the worse.]
