Romans 15:1

We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

a. ASV: Now we that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

  

b. YLT: And we ought -- we who are strong -- to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves;

d. Amplified Bible Classic: We who are strong [in our convictions and of robust faith] ought to bear with the failings and the frailties and the tender scruples of the weak; [we ought to help carry the doubts and qualms of others] and not to please ourselves.

1. “We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak…”

a. We [Strong: 2249 hēmeîs, hay-mice'; nominative plural of G1473; we (only used when emphatic):—us, we (ourselves).]

b. then [Strong: 1161  dé, deh; a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:—also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

c. that are [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

d. strong [Strong: 1415  dynatós, doo-nat-os'; from G1410; powerful or capable (literally or figuratively); neuter possible:—able, could, (that is) mighty (man), possible, power, strong.]

e. ought [Strong: 3784 opheílō, of-i'-lo; probably from the base of G3786 (through the idea of accruing); to owe (pecuniarily); figuratively, to be under obligation (ought, must, should); morally, to fail in duty:—behove, be bound, (be) debt(-or), (be) due(-ty), be guilty (indebted), (must) need(-s), ought, owe, should.]

  

g. to bear [Strong: 941 bastázō, bas-tad'-zo; perhaps remotely derived from the base of G939(through the idea of removal); to lift, literally or figuratively (endure, declare, sustain, receive, etc.):—bear, carry, take up.]

h. the [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

i. infirmities [Strong: 771 asthénēma, as-then'-ay-mah; from G770; a scruple of conscience:—infirmity.]

k. weak [Strong: 102 adýnatos, ad-oo'-nat-os; from G1 (as a negative particle) and G1415; unable, i.e. weak (literally or figuratively); passively, impossible:—could not do, impossible, impotent, not possible, weak.]

2.  “...and not to please ourselves.”

a. and [Strong: 2532 kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. not [Strong: 3361 mḗ, may; a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas G3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas G3756 expects an affirmative one)) whether:—any but (that), × forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations.]

c. [to] please [Strong: 700 aréskō, ar-es'-ko; probably from G142 (through the idea of exciting emotion); to be agreeable (or by implication, to seek to be so):—please.]

d. ourselves [Strong: 1438 heautoû, heh-ow-too'; from a reflexive pronoun otherwise obsolete and the genitive case (dative case or accusative case) of G846; him- (her-, it-, them-, also (in conjunction with the personal pronoun of the other persons) my-, thy-, our-, your-) self (selves), etc.:—alone, her (own, -self), (he) himself, his (own), itself, one (to) another, our (thine) own(-selves), + that she had, their (own, own selves), (of) them(-selves), they, thyself, you, your (own, own conceits, own selves, -selves).]
