Romans 15:12

Romans 15:12

And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.

a. ASV: And again, Isaiah saith, There shall be the root of Jesse, And he that ariseth to rule over the Gentiles; On him shall the Gentiles hope.
  
b. YLT: And again, Isaiah saith, 'There shall be the root of Jesse, and he who is rising to rule nations -- upon him shall nations hope;'
d. Amplified Bible Classic: And further Isaiah says, There shall be a [a]Sprout from the Root of Jesse, He Who rises to rule over the Gentiles; in Him shall the Gentiles hope.
1. “And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse…”

a. And [Strong: 2532 kaí, kahee; apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:—and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. again [Strong: 3825 pálin, pal'-in; probably from the same as G3823 (through the idea of oscillatory repetition); (adverbially) anew, i.e. (of place) back, (of time) once more, or (conjunctionally) furthermore or on the other hand:—again.]
c. Esaias [Strong: 2268 Hēsaḯas, hay-sah-ee'-as; of Hebrew origin (H3470); Hesaias (i.e. Jeshajah), an Israelite:—Esaias.]
d. saith [Strong: 3004 légō, leg'-o; a primary verb; properly, to "lay" forth, i.e. (figuratively) relate (in words (usually of systematic or set discourse; whereas G2036 and G5346 generally refer to an individual expression or speech respectively; while G4483 is properly to break silence merely, and G2980 means an extended or random harangue)); by implication, to mean:—ask, bid, boast, call, describe, give out, name, put forth, say(-ing, on), shew, speak, tell, utter.]
e. There shall be [Strong: 2071 ésomai, es'-om-ahee; future of G1510; will be:—shall (should) be (have), (shall) come (to pass), × may have, × fall, what would follow, × live long, ×sojourn.]
  
g. [a] root [Strong: 4491 rhíza, hrid'-zah; apparently a primary word; a "root" (literally or figuratively):—root.]
h. [of] Jesse [Strong: 2421 Iessaí, es-es-sah'-ee; of Hebrew origin (H3448); Jessæ (i.e. Jishai), an Israelite:—Jesse.]
2.  “...and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.”

d. [the] Gentiles [Strong: 1484 éthnos, eth'-nos; probably from G1486; a race (as of the same habit), i.e. a tribe; specially, a foreign (non-Jewish) one (usually, by implication, pagan):—Gentile, heathen, nation, people.]
e. in [Strong: 1909 epí, ep-ee'; a primary preposition; properly, meaning superimposition (of time, place, order, etc.), as a relation of distribution (with the genitive case), i.e. over, upon, etc.; of rest (with the dative case) at, on, etc.; of direction (with the accusative case) towards, upon, etc.:—about (the times), above, after, against, among, as long as (touching), at, beside, × have charge of, (be-, (where-))fore, in (a place, as much as, the time of, -to), (because) of, (up-)on (behalf of), over, (by, for) the space of, through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), with.]

h. [shall the] Gentiles [Strong: 1484 éthnos, eth'-nos; probably from G1486; a race (as of the same habit), i.e. a tribe; specially, a foreign (non-Jewish) one (usually, by implication, pagan):—Gentile, heathen, nation, people.]
i. trust [Strong: 1679 elpízō, el-pid'-zo; from G1680; to expect or confide:—(have, thing) hope(-d) (for), trust.]
  
1). From the beginning it has always been in the plan of God to save the Gentiles as well as the Jews. The plan of redemption that includes all humanity was planned out before the the creation of the universe.
a). 1 Peter 1:18-20 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
1:20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

2). Paul begins to cite examples from the Old Testament to prove his case that it was God’s plan all along to save the Gentiles. The example here is from Isaiah.

a). Isaiah 11:10  And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.
