Matthew 14:23

And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

a. ASV: And after he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray: and when even was come, he was there alone.

b. YLT: And having let away the multitudes, he went up to the mountain by himself to pray, and evening having come, he was there alone,

c. Amplified Bible Classic: And after He had dismissed the multitudes, He went up into the hills by Himself to pray. When it was evening, He was still there alone.

1. “And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray…”

a. And [Strong: 2532. kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

b. [when he had] sent [Strong: 630. apoluo ap-ol-oo'-o from 575 and 3089; to free fully, i.e. (literally) relieve, release, dismiss (reflexively, depart), or (figuratively) let die, pardon or (specially) divorce:--(let) depart, dismiss, divorce, forgive, let go, loose, put (send) away, release, set at liberty.]

d. multitudes [away] [Strong: 3793. ochlos okh'los from a derivative of 2192 (meaning a vehicle); a throng (as borne along); by implication, the rabble; by extension, a class of people; figuratively, a riot:--company, multitude, number (of people), people, press.]

e. [he] went up [Strong: 305. anabaino an-ab-ah'-ee-no from 303 and the base of 939; to go up (literally or figuratively):--arise, ascend (up), climb (go, grow, rise, spring) up, come (up).]

k. [to] pray [Strong: 4336. proseuchomai pros-yoo'-khom-ahee from 4314 and 2172; to pray to God, i.e. supplicate, worship:--pray (X earnestly, for), make prayer.

2. “...and when the evening was come, he was there alone.”

e. alone [Strong:  3441. monos mon'-os probably from 3306; remaining, i.e. sole or single; by implication, mere:--alone, only, by themselves.]

1). Here is a time marker. Evening was marked by about sundown about 6 P.M. So that means that he sent the disciples away in a boat to cross the sea before that, perhaps about 5 or 5:30 P.M.
