Matthew 19:6

Matthew 19:6

Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

a. ASV: So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

b. YLT: so that they are no more two, but one flesh; what therefore God did join together, let no man put asunder.'

c. Classic Amplified: So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder (separate).

1. “Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh…”

a. Wherefore [Strong: 5620. hoste hoce'-teh from 5613 and 5037; so too, i.e. thus therefore (in various relations of consecution, as follow):--(insomuch) as, so that (then), (insomuch) that, therefore, to, wherefore.]

b. they are [Strong: 1526. eisi i-see' 3d person plural present indicative of 1510; they are:--agree, are, be, dure, X is, were.]

c. no more [Strong: 3765. ouketi ook-et'-ee, also (separately) ouk eti ook et'-ee from 3756 and 2089; not yet, no longer:--after that (not), (not) any more, henceforth (hereafter) not, no longer (more), not as yet (now), now no more (not), yet (not).]

d. twain [Strong: 1417. duo doo'-o a primary numeral; "two":--both, twain, two.]

e. but [Strong: 235. alla al-lah' neuter plural of 243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):--and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]

f. one [Strong: 1520. heis hice (including the neuter (etc.) hen); a primary numeral; one:--a(-n, -ny, certain), + abundantly, man, one (another), only, other, some.]

g. flesh [Strong: 4561. sarx sarx probably from the base of 4563; flesh (as stripped of the skin), i.e. (strictly) the meat of an animal (as food), or (by extension) the body (as opposed to the soul (or spirit), or as the symbol of what is external, or as the means of kindred), or (by implication) human nature (with its frailties (physically or morally) and passions), or (specially), a human being (as such):--carnal(-ly, + -ly minded), flesh(-ly).]

2. “...What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”

a. What [Strong: 3739. hos hos, including feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]

b. therefore [Strong: 3767. oun oon apparently a primary word; (adverbially) certainly, or (conjunctionally) accordingly:--and (so, truly), but, now (then), so (likewise then), then, therefore, verily, wherefore.]

c. [Strong: 3588. [ho] ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.] [Thayer: [ho] ὁ, ἡ, τό, originally τος, τῇ, τό (as is evident from the forms τοι, ται for οἱ, αἱ in Homer and the Ionic writings), corresponds to our definite article the (German der, die, das), which is properly a demonstrative pronoun, which we see in its full force in Homer, and of which we find certain indubitable traces also in all kinds of Greek prose, and hence also in the N. T.]

d. God [Strong: 2316. theos theh'-os of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]

e. [hath] joined together [Strong: 4801. suzeugnumi sood-zyoog'-noo-mee from 4862 and the base of 2201; to yoke together, i.e. (figuratively) conjoin (in marriage):--join together.]

f. [let] not [Strong: 3361. me may a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas 3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas 3756 expects an affirmative one)) whether:--any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations.]

g. man [Strong: 444. anthropos anth'-ro-pos from 435 and ops (the countenance; from 3700); man-faced, i.e. a human being:--certain, man.]

h. put asunder [Strong: 5563. chorizo kho-rid'-zo from 5561; to place room between, i.e. part; reflexively, to go away:--depart, put asunder, separate.
1). In these verses Matthew 19:4-6, we have the two complementary accounts of the creation of the first man and woman. In Matthew 19:4 Jesus quotes from Genesis 1.

a). Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

b). beginning [746 * arche][Strong: a commencement, or (concretely) chief (in various applications of order, time, place, or rank):--beginning, corner, (at the, the) first (estate), magistrate, power, principality, principle, rule.

c). Even though Adam and Eve were created at different times, Jesus still referred to their union as in the beginning. Adam had already been created and placed in the garden and had begun naming the animals, before Eve was created. It wasn’t until Adam was in the task of naming the animals that Adam realized his need. It was then that Eve was created and given to man. 

2). In Matthew 19:5 Jesus is quoting from Genesis 2.

a). Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

3). In Matthew 19:4-6 Jesus was quoting from Genesis 1:27 and 2:24, and considerers them the same event.
