Romans 7

Romans 7:1


Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

1. “Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,)…”

 

a. Know ye not [Strong: 50 agnoeo ag-no-eh'-o from 1 (as a negative particle) and 3539; not to know (through lack of information or intelligence); by implication, to ignore (through disinclination):--(be) ignorant(-ly), not know, not understand, unknown.]

d. [the] law [Strong: 3551 nomos nom'-os from a primary nemo (to parcel out, especially food or grazing to animals); law (through the idea of prescriptive usage), genitive case (regulation), specially, (of Moses (including the volume); also of the Gospel), or figuratively (a principle):--law.]

 

1). Paul is building a case to convince his Jewish brethren concerning Christ, that their covenant husband is dead. 

 

2. “…how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?

 

a. Romans 7:2

 

For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.

1). Some Old Covenant verses that touch on this is the situation surrounding David, Abigail and Nabal (1 Samuel 25). After Nabal died Abigail became David’s wife.

 

a). 1 Samuel 25:39-42 And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the Lord, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the Lord hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.

25:40 And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife.

25:41 And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.

25:42 And Abigail hasted, and arose and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.

 

2). David, Bathsheba and Uriah (2 Samuel 11). After Uriah was killed in battle Bathsheba became David’s wife.

 

a). 2 Samuel 11:26, 27  And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.

11:27 And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.

 

3). Paul is establishing the case that as long as the husband is alive the wife is bound to her husband. Israel is bound to the law of her husband God.


  Romans 7:3

 

So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

3. “…though she be married to another man.”

1). What Paul is saying to Jews, “to them that know the law” is that Israel’s husband died on the cross when Christ died. When Christ died, the law that Israel was bound to, the Mosaic law and the law of sin and death, no longer had authority over Israel.


 Romans 7:4

 

Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

 

a. NLT: So, my dear brothers and sisters, this is the point: You died to the power of the law when you died with Christ. And now you are united with the one who was raised from the dead. 1. “Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ…”

2. “…that ye should be married to another…”

3. “…even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.”

[even to him who] is raised [Strong: 1453 egeiro eg-i'-ro; probably akin to the base of 58 (through the idea of collecting one's faculties); to waken (transitively or intransitively), i.e. rouse (literally, from sleep, from sitting or lying, from disease, from death; or figuratively, from obscurity, inactivity, ruins, nonexistence):--awake, lift (up), raise (again, up), rear up, (a-)rise (again, up), stand, take up.]

 

b. [from the] dead [Strong: 3498 nekros nek-ros'; from an apparently primary nekus (a corpse); dead (literally or figuratively; also as noun):--dead.]

 

c.  [that we should] bring forth fruit [Strong: 2592 karpophoreo kar-pof-or-eh'-o; from 2593; to be fertile (literally or figuratively):--be (bear, bring forth) fruit(-ful).]

 

d. [unto] God [Strong: 2316 theos theh'-os; of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with 3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very:--X exceeding, God, god(-ly, -ward).]

 

1). When Christ died Israel’s husband died, therefore covenentally they were free from the law, and really under obligation to receive their Messiah. Covenentally the same husband that died, rose from the dead.


a). Jeremiah 3:14, 20 Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:

3:20 Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.


2). Paul echoes this same thought in 1 Corinthians.

 

a). 1 Corinthians 7:39 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.


Romans 7:5

 

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

 

a. NLT: When we were controlled by our old nature, sinful desires were at work within us, and the law aroused these evil desires that produced a harvest of sinful deeds, resulting in death. 1. “For when we were in the flesh…”

 

a. [For when we were in the] flesh [Strong: 4561 sarx sarx probably from the base of 4563; flesh (as stripped of the skin), i.e. (strictly) the meat of an animal (as food), or (by extension) the body (as opposed to the soul (or spirit), or as the symbol of what is external, or as the means of kindred), or (by implication) human nature (with its frailties (physically or morally) and passions), or (specially), a human being (as such):--carnal(-ly, + -ly minded), flesh(-ly).]

 

1). The phrase “in the flesh” in some of the verses where it is found, depending on the context means, before the new birth, before conversion to Christ. I believe it also refers to walking in disobedience.

 

a). Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

 

b). Romans 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

 

c). Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

 

d). Ephesians 2:11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

 

e). 1 Peter 4:2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

 

f). 1 Peter 4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

 

2. “…the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.”

 

a. [the] motions [Strong: 3804 pathema path'-ay-mah from a presumed derivative of 3806; something undergone, i.e. hardship or pain; subjectively, an emotion or influence:-- affection, affliction, motion, suffering.]

 

b. [of] sins [Strong: 266 hamartia ham-ar-tee'-ah from 264; a sin (properly abstract):--offence, sin(-ful).]

 

c. [which were by the] law [Strong: 3551 nomos nom'-os from a primary nemo (to parcel out, especially food or grazing to animals); law (through the idea of prescriptive usage), genitive case (regulation), specially, (of Moses (including the volume); also of the Gospel), or figuratively (a principle):--law.]

 

d. [did] work [Strong: 1754 energeo en-erg-eh'-o from 1756; to be active, efficient:--do, (be) effectual (fervent), be mighty in, shew forth self, work (effectually in).]

f. [to] bring forth fruit [Strong: 2592 karpophoreo kar-pof-or-eh'-o from 2593; to be fertile (literally or figuratively):--be (bear, bring forth) fruit(-ful).]

 

g. [unto] death [Strong: 2288 thanatos than'-at-os from 2348; (properly, an adjective used as a noun) death (literally or figuratively):--X deadly, (be...) death.]

 

1). Paul is describing life before the new birth. He is going to contrast it in the next verse with life after the new birth.


Romans 7:6

 

But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

 

a. NLT: But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit. 1. “But now we are delivered from the law…”

b. now [Strong: 3570 nuni noo-nee' a prolonged form of 3568 for emphasis; just now:--now.]

1). The law is a spiritual thing. It was given by God, therefore it emanates from the spiritual as contrasted from the material, the carnal, the natural, even though it affects all of them.

 

2). The law is spiritual. Two verses previous Paul wrote that the law was good, just and holy.

 

a). Romans 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

 

3). Even in unregenerate men under the Old Covenant, the law had a limited effect for good and helped man obey God.

 

a). Psalm 19:7-11 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

19:8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.

1). Unregenerate, spiritually dead. We were sold under sin when our first parents Adam and Eve sinned and ate of the tree God commanded them that if they ate of it they would “surely die”.

2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

 

2). Death entered man’s existence because of his sin.

3). Through man’s one disobedience to God and obedience to the devil, man became a servant or slave to the devil.

5). What follows in Romans 7:15-24 is a description of “the law of sin and death” that operates in every human being. We were sold into this condition by the sin of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. When mankind sinned spiritual death entered into his spirit, “the law of sin and death” became part of man’s nature and he began to walk in bondage to the devil, the enemy became his master. We were sold into this condition by our first parents.

Adam Clark Commentary: Now then it is no more I - It is not that I which constitutes reason and conscience, but sin-corrupt and sensual inclinations, that dwelleth in me - that has the entire domination over my reason, darkening my understanding, and perverting my judgment; for which there is condemnation in the law, but no cure. So we find here that there is a principle in the unregenerate man stronger than reason itself; a principle which is, properly speaking, not of the essence of the soul, but acts in it, as its lord, or as a tyrant. This is inbred and indwelling sin - the seed of the serpent; by which the whole soul is darkened, confused, perverted, and excited to rebellion against God.
