Romans 6

 Romans 6:1

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Romans 6:4

 

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

4:4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

4:5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.


Romans 6:5

 

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Knowing [this] [Strong: 1097 ginosko ghin-oce'-ko a prolonged form of a primary verb; to "know" (absolutely) in a great variety of applications and with many implications (as follow, with others not thus clearly expressed):--allow, be aware (of), feel, (have) know(-ledge), perceived, be resolved, can speak, be sure, understand.]

 

b. old [3820 palaios pal-ah-yos' from 3819; antique, i.e. not recent, worn out:--old.]

 

c. man [Strong: 444 anthropos anth'-ro-pos from 435 and ops (the countenance; from 3700); man-faced, i.e. a human being:--certain, man.]

 

1). The “old man” is referring to the old nature of humans before they get born again, it is what drives all people before they get born again. This nature is described in Romans 7:14-24.It is referred to as “the law of sin and death, (Romans 8:2).

 

2). Dake: There is a real law of sin and death, and back of this law, executing it, a real power from a real nature and a real person who is stronger than man himself.

 

d. [is] crucified with [him] [Strong: 4957 sustauroo soos-tow-ro'-o from 4862 and 4717; to impale in company with (literally or figuratively):--crucify with.]

 

2. “…that the body of sin might be destroyed…”

1). It is the new birth, the born again experience that empowers us through the grace of God to put off the sins of the flesh.

1). The desire of God is we should not serve sin, that sin would no longer dominate us. This is the New Covenant.

 

a). Romans 6:14-18  For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.


Romans 6:7

 

For he that is dead is freed from sin.

1). Institute Of Creation Research Daily Devotional 8/23/14 One of the greatest doctrinal truths of the Bible is that the Christian life is one of victory over sin. The law of God has condemned us as lawbreakers (James 2:10), but Christ died for our sins, and “ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ” (Romans 7:4). We should live in victory over sin, but somehow we still stumble. “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” The remedy for such lapses is at hand, of course. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:8, 9). Nevertheless, if Christ is really living in us by His Spirit, if we have really been born again, then we cannot continue to live in sin. “How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?” (Romans 6:2). “Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin” (vv. 6-7). The secret to making this doctrine practical reality in our lives is simply the motivation of gratitude. 1). Rick Renner 1/31/16 When Paul writes that we were previously the servants of sin, he uses the Greek word doulos, one of the most wretched expressions for a slave in the ancient Greek language. It described a servant who was so totally sold into slavery that he had no destiny of his own; rather, he was perpetually obligated to do the bidding of his owner — fulfilling the whims, impulses, quirks, urges, and desires of his master for the rest of his life. In other words, the word doulos depicts one whose very existence is to fulfill the commands of his master. Or as one expositor explained, the word portrays one whose will is completely swallowed up in the will of another. This is the word Paul uses to describe our slavery to sin before Jesus came into our lives.
