And the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is in the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take, and put it into the water:

Stone Edition THE CHUMASH, Rabbinic Commentary, Note under Numbers 5:17: The water is drawn from the Temple Laver, the utensil that, by its very essence, recalled the purity of Jewish women and their devotion to their husbands (see notes to Exodus 38:8). Such water, therefore, was a fitting vehicle with which to punish an unfaithful wife. The earthenware vessel symbolized contemptuously the fine goblets into which she poured wine for her lover (Rashi), and the earth forced her to think that she would die and return to earth if she is guilty (Ramban).
