Unger’s bible Dictionary: Bashan: The territory extended from Gilead in the South to hermon on the North, and from the Jordan to Selecah, the present Salkhat, on the East, and included Edrei (Deuteronomy 3:10; Joshua 9:100, Ashtaroth (Deuteronomy 1:4; Joshua 9:10; etc.), the present Tell-Ashtur, and Golan (Deuteronomy 4:43; Joshua 20:8; 21:27). Golan, one of its cities, was a city of refuge. Its productiveness was noted in the O.T. (Psalm 22:12; Jeremiah 50:19). The Western part is exceedingly fertile today. On the east rise the Hauran Mountains to a height of 6 thousand feet. It was noted for its fine breed of cattle (Deuteronomy 32:14; Ezekiel 39:18). The cities are described by moses as “cities fortified with high walls, gates and bars” (Deuteronomy 3:5). The inhabitants were giant like men who were called Rephaim in the era of Abraham (Genesis 14:5). Some of the deserted town are as perfect as when inhabited. When Israel entered Canaan, Argob, a province of Bashan, contained sixty fenced cities (Deuteronomy 3:4, 5; 1 Kings 4:13). After the exile Bashan was divided into four districts: Gaulonitis, or Jaulan, the western Auranitis, or Hauran (Ezekiel 47:16); Argob, or Trachonitis; and Batanaea, now Ard-ei-Bathanyeh.
