Romans 2

 Romans 2:1

Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

 

a. NLT: You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. 1. “Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest…”

 

a. [Therefore thou are inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that] judgeth [Strong: 2919 krino kree'-no properly, to distinguish, i.e. decide (mentally or judicially); by implication, to try, condemn, punish:--avenge, conclude, condemn, damn, decree, determine, esteem, judge, go to (sue at the) law, ordain, call in question, sentence to, think.]

 

1). There are some instances where we are commanded not to judge.

 

a). Matthew 7:1, 2 Judge not, that ye be not judged.

7:2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

 

c). James 4:11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

 

2). There are some circumstances where we are to judge.  All of 1 Corinthians 5 deals with Paul instructing the church to excommunicate the brother in the church that was committing fornication. The passage ends with the use of judge.

 

a). 1 Corinthians 5:9-13 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

5:10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

5:11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

5:12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?

5:13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

 

b). 1 Corinthians 14:29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

 

3). Other uses of the word for judge.

 

a).  1 Corinthians 6:1-6 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?

6:2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?

6:3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?

6:4 If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.

6:5 I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?

6:6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers.

 

b). John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

 

2. “…for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.”

 


Romans 2:2

 

But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.

1). Regardless if it is Old or New Testament the judgments against such behavior is truth.

 

2. “…against them which commit such things.”

 

a. [against them which] commit [Strong: 4238 prasso pras'-so a primary verb; to "practise", i.e. perform repeatedly or habitually (thus differing from 4160, which properly refers to a single act); by implication, to execute, accomplish, etc.; specially, to collect (dues), fare (personally):--commit, deeds, do, exact, keep, require, use arts.]

 

b. such things [Strong: 5108 toioutos toy-oo'-tos (including the other inflections); from 5104 and 3778; truly this, i.e. of this sort (to denote character or individuality):--like, such (an one).]

 

1). The “such things” are all the behaviors listed in Romans 1.


Romans 2:3

 

And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

2. “…not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?”

Romans 2:5

 

But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

1). The word of God speaks how we can lay up treasure in heaven through our godly generosity toward God.

 

a). Matthew 6:19, 20   Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

 

2). Here it says an individual can treasure up wrath for the day of wrath, the day of judgment. It means make the judgment against them worse.

 

2. “…against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;”

 

a. [against the] day [Strong: 2250 hemera hay-mer'-ah feminine (with 5610 implied) of a derivative of hemai (to sit; akin to the base of 1476) meaning tame, i.e. gentle; day, i.e. (literally) the time space between dawn and dark, or the whole 24 hours (but several days were usually reckoned by the Jews as inclusive of the parts of both extremes); figuratively, a period (always defined more or less clearly by the context):--age, + alway, (mid-)day (by day, (-ly)), + for ever, judgment, (day) time, while, years.]

 

b. of wrath  [Strong: 3709 orge or-gay' from 3713; properly, desire (as a reaching forth or excitement of the mind), i.e. (by analogy), violent passion (ire, or (justifiable) abhorrence); by implication punishment:--anger, indignation, vengeance, wrath.]

1). I personally believe this is referring to the Great White Throne Judgment. In this case, the wrath this individual has been treasureing up will be judged and the righteous judgment of God toward that treasuring up of wrath will be revealed.

 

a). Revelation 20:11-13  And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

 

2). The next verses reveal that very thing.

 

a). Romans 5:6-9 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

2:7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

2:8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

2:9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;


Romans 2:6

 

Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

1). The passage Romans 2:1-11 is referencing the individuals who respond to the grace of God (Romans 2:7, 10), and those who reject the grace of God (Romans 2:8, 9). All will be judged according to their deeds and as Romans 2:11 declares,  “there is no respect of persons with God.”.

 

a).  Revelation 20:11-13  And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

 

b). Colossians 3:22-25 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God;

3:23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

3:24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

3:25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

 

c). 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. 


Romans 2:7

 

To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

Romans 2:8

Romans 2:9

 

Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

1. “Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil…”

 

a. Tribulation [Strong: 2347 thlipsis thlip'-sis from 2346; pressure (literally or figuratively):--afflicted(-tion), anguish, burdened, persecution, tribulation, trouble.]

e. evil [Strong: 2556 kakos kak-os' apparently a primary word; worthless (intrinsically, such; whereas 4190 properly refers to effects), i.e. (subjectively) depraved, or (objectively) injurious:--bad, evil, harm, ill, noisome, wicked.]

 

1). This of course is a continuation of the previous verse so it would read something like this.

1). Paul as a Messianic Jew always went first to the Jew and then to the Gentile, in that order. In Acts 13:5 they preached the word in Jewish synagogues, and in Acts 13:14 Paul went first into the synagogue at Antioch in Pisidia. When the Jews for the most part rejected the gospel in that city, Paul and Barnabas’s reaction was then went to the Gentiles’

 

a). Acts 13:45-49 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

13:47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.

He will take no wicked man to glory, let his nation or advantages be what they may; and he will send no righteous man to perdition, though brought up in the very bosom of Gentilism. And as he will judge in that day according to character and conduct, so his judgment will proceed on the ground of the graces, privileges, and blessings which they had received, improved or abused. And as there is no respect of persons with God in judgment, so there can be none in the previous administration of his saving blessings. He that will be condemned for his unrighteousness, will be condemned on the ground that he had sufficient grace afforded him for the salvation of his soul; and his condemnation will rest on the simple principle, that he abused the grace which was sufficient to save him, by acting in opposition to its dictates and influence. 1). The thoughts of their conscience will excuse or accuse them. I am reminded of the Supreme Court case Stone v. Graham, where the Ten Commandments were thrown out of school in 1980. In that case the majority acknowledged the work of the law described here in this verse. The Justices wrote: “If the postes copies of the Ten Commandments are to have any effect at all, it will be to induce the schoolchildren to read, meditate upon, perhaps to venerate and obey, the Commandments. However desirable this might be as a matter of private devotion, it is not a permissible state objective under the Establishment Clause.” These Justices are honourable imbeciles, professing themselves to be wise, they are fools.


Romans 2:16

 

In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

1). Albert Barnes Commentary: Makest thy boast in God - Thou dost boast, or glory, that thou hast the knowledge of the true God, while other nations are in darkness. On this account the Jew felt himself far elevated above all other people, and despised them. It was true that they only had the true knowledge of God, and that he had declared himself to be their God, but this was not a ground for boasting, but for gratitude.

2). Our bodily members can be used as weapons of unrighteousness.

1). Very clearly Paul is identifying from a spiritual/covenant perspective who and what a Jew is. He is distinguishing between inward and I assume outward circumcision. He is not saying that a physical Jew is not a Jew. He is speaking of a Covenant Jew. Because of what Jesus did in his death and resurrection and then our believing what he did we become grafted into Israel, we become Jews spiritually.

 

a). Romans 11:13-18 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:

11:14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.

11:15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

11:16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.

11:17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;

11:18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

 

2. “…and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter…”

1). Circumcision was the Old Testament method for males by which one entered the Jewish community, into Covenant with God.

 

a). Genesis 17:10-14 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

17:11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

17:12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.

17:13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

17:14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

 

2). Under the New Covenant the circumcision is inward, a spiritual circumcision.

 

a). Colossians 2:11-13 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

2:12 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

             

3). Notice the similarity in the words “body of the sins of the flesh” in Colossians and from Romans

 

a). Romans 6:3-6 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

 

4). We enter into the New Covenant through the New Birth, the born again experience when we believe and confess what God did for us through Jesus Christ. With that one act of obedience we receive righteousness and salvation.

 

a). Romans 10:6-10 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

10:7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)

10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10:6 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

 

3. “…whose praise is not of men, but of God.”
