Romans 5

 Roman 5:1

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

 

a. NLT: Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. 1. “Therefore being justified by faith…”

 

a. [Therefore being] justified [Strong: 1344 1344. dikaioo dik-ah-yo'-o from 1342; to render (i.e. show or regard as) just or innocent:--free, justify(-ier), be righteous.]

[by] faith [Strong: 4102. pistis pis'-tis from 3982; persuasion, i.e. credence; moral conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, constancy in such profession; by extension, the system of religious (Gospel) truth itself:--assurance, belief, believe, faith, fidelity.]

 

1). In this verse, the faith that initiated our justification making peace between God and us is not our faith, it is not our believing. It was God’s faith.

 

a). Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

 

b). I may be wrong in this. All the translations point to our faith being how we are risen, and that is spiritually impossible.

 

2). Many Christians erroneously think they were justified when they believe. They think the peace between them and God started when they accepted Christ. The act of faith, the believing and speaking that accomplished our justification was done by God when Jesus came out of the ground. When we were justified Jesus came out of the ground.

 

a). New American Standard Version: He who was delivered up because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.

 

3). Romans 5:1 cannot be studied without looking at it with Romans 4:25, the preceding verse. “Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:” The resurrection of Jesus from the grave proved that the human race was justified and forgiven by the sacrifice of Christ. Our part of faith in this is revealed in the next verse, Romans 5:2, By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

 

2. “…we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”

d. Jesus [Strong: 2424. Iesous ee-ay-sooce' of Hebrew origin (3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites:--Jesus.]

 

e. Christ [Strong: 5547. Christos khris-tos' from 5548; anointed, i.e. the Messiah, an epithet of Jesus:--Christ.] 

 

1). Likewise the “peace” Romans 5:1 speaks of was not accomplished by anything that we’ve done, it was accomplished by the work of Christ. Isaiah 53:5 says, “…the chastisement of our peace was upon him…” We enter into it through the New Birth.

 

2). Jesus is our peace.

 

a). Ephesians 2:14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

 

3). It is very significant Romans 4:17 is spoken within the context of our justification: Speaking of God the verse says, “…who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.” When we were declared justified by God, God raised Jesus from the dead, He was quickening us who were dead in sin and calling us who were sinners, justified and declaring peace between Him and us. We enter into it when we repent, we believe God raised Jesus from the dead and we declare Jesus our Lord. 


Romans 5:2

 

By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

1). The “grace wherein we stand” is our justification that was created by the faith of God in Romans 5:1. We have access into this grace. The justification and reconciling of all mankind was accomplished by God through Jesus Christ in his death, burial and resurrection. When we believe that truth with our heart in faith and confess with with our mouth Jesus is Lord, we enter into that “grace”.   

 

2. “…and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

 

a. and rejoice [Strong: 2744. kauchaomai kow-khah'-om-ahee from some (obsolete) base akin to that of aucheo (to boast) and 2172; to vaunt (in a good or a bad sense):--(make) boast, glory, joy, rejoice.]

Romans 5:3

 

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

2. “…in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

1). Most translations have the state of being a “sinner” as past tense. The Greek dictionaries that I have are as follows.  Strong’s is the general definition. Thayer is the more explicit, how it is used in this exact verse. He clearly means it as a state that formerly existed but no longer does.

Romans 5:9

 

Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

1). The contrasting states laid out in Romans 5:8 & Romans 5:9  are “sinner” and “justified”.


2). The justification took place then Jesus came out of the ground. When the sin penalty was paid, when the justice of God was satisfied we were justified and it is then that Jesus came out of the grave.

c). [Young’s Literal Translation] “…and was raised up because of our being declared righteous.”

3). The NKJV and Young’s translation have it right. When we were justified, Jesus was raised.

 

2. “…we shall be saved from wrath through him.”

 

a. we shall be saved [Strong: 4982 sozo sode'-zo from a primary sos (contraction for obsolete saos, "safe"); to save, i.e. deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):--heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole.]

1). The reconciliation between God and us was accomplished by the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus before we were born. Between us and God there was enmity, but between God and us there was none. The resurrection of Christ occurred because we were declared justified.

5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

 

2). This was all accomplished by God through Jesus we had nothing to do to help it along. The justification and the faith that produced it was God’s doing not ours. It was His faith not our’s. When the Scripture says “therefore being justified by faith” it is not our faith it was God’s faith securing our justification through what Jesus did.

 

2. “…much more, being reconciled…”

1). This is referring to believers, those who are in Christ, after the new birth. From the establishment of the New Covenant, the enmity was between us and God, not between God and us. When we enter the new birth, the reconciliation was complete, on both sides. We then enter into the ministry of spreading that reconciliation to the rest of mankind.

 

a). 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

1). Spiritual death and the law of sin and death reigned in the hearts of men and women beginning at the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. When Adam and Eve sinned in the garden they died spiritually, and because they died spiritually they eventually died physically.

 

 a).  Genesis 2:16, 17 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

 

2). Spiritual death passed into all men and women.

 

a). Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

 

2. “…even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.”

1). Grace reigns through righteousness. The grace, the empowerment to overcome the law of sin and death comes to reign in us through righteousness. We need to become righteousness minded and reject sin mindedness. We have been given the righteousness of God

 

a). Romans 3:19-26 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

 

2). No where in the New Testament does the Bible address born again believers as “sinners” or as many say “sinners saved by grace”.

 

a). Romans 1:7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

 

b). 1 Corinthians 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both their's and our's:

 

c). 2 Corinthians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia:

 

d). Ephesians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:

 

e). Philippians 1:1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

 

f). Colossians 1:2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

 

3). Is 1 John 1:8-10 true? Absolutely. But what is also true is that as the born again believer grows in his relationship with God he will begin to overcome temptations and be victorious over old sinful habits. What will hinder that will be constantly declaring he is a sinner, but one saved by grace. In Romans 5 the wording in the Greek and in the English  clearly addresses the label of ‘sinner” as past tense. The contrast is between those who are “yet sinners” and those who are “now justified”

 

a). Romans 5:8, 9 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

 

b). Most translations have the state of being a “sinner” in Romans 5:8 as past tense. In Thayer’s Greek dictionary he is more explicit. He clearly means it as a state that formerly existed but no longer does.

 

4). 1 Corinthians 15:34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
