1). Perry Stone: Caesarea Philippi, today called Banias, is twenty five miles north of the Sea of Galilee near the base of Mount hermon. It is known for a large spring, one of three in the region that feeds the Jordan River. This area later named after the Greek god, Pan, a half man, half he-goat, god of fright (thus the word panic). In christ’s time, an underwater spring emerging from a large cave under the mountain was believed to be the entrance of the underworld. It was in this area and setting that Peter declared Jesus to be the “Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). The rock of (foundational truth) that would build the church was not Peter, but that Christ is the Son of God (Matthew 16:18).
