Genesis 25:34

Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentils; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

3). He purposely did things to grieve his parents.

4). Esau failed the grace of God. 


a). Hebrews 12:15-17  Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

12:16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

12:17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.


5). Some parts of Genesis are not in chronological order, for instance in Genesis 25:17, the death of Ishmael is recorded previous to the births of Esau and Jacob (Genesis 25:24-26), yet in real time Esau and Jacob were 63 years old when Ishmael died. Genesis 25:17 is a time marker. Genesis 25:17 "And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people." Note: This is a time marker that helps to put events in chronological order. Isaac was 14 years younger than Ishmael. Isaac was born when Abraham was about 100 years old (Genesis 21:5). Abraham was 86 when Ishmael was born (Genesis 16:16). Isaac was 123 when Ishmael died and would live for 57 more years (Genesis 35:28). Jacob and Esau were 63 when Ishmael died, for when they were born Isaac was 60 (Genesis 25:26). Ishmael died 14 years before Jacob was sent to Padan-aram.

1). There is no question in my mind that the motivation behind her favoritism of Jacob was because of this word from God.


a). Genesis 25:21-23 And Isaac intreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren: and the Lord was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

25:22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the Lord.

25:23 And the Lord said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.


b). Finis Jennings Dake: The family of Esau or Edom seemed to be stronger at first than Jacob’s (or israel’s), for they had dukes and kings long before Israel did (Genesis 36). And they were powerful enough to resist israel’s passage through their land when coming out of Egypt (Numbers 20). Later, David completely defeated them and made them subject to Israel for about 150 years (2 Samuel 8:14). After the Babylonian captivity, the Maccabees compelled them to leave their country or embrace the Jewish faith. From then on they were ruled by Israel. In the Millennium they will be under Israel (Psalm 60:8-10;Isaiah 11:14; Isaiah 63:1; Amos 9:12).

1). Esau was a man’s man, which in itself is not evil, but his disposition led him by his own choices to become someone who saw no “profit” dispised his birthright (Genesis 25:34). 


2). This though, was not the only indicator. Esau was a fornicator.


a). Hebrews 12:16 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

12:16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.


b). Genesis 26:34, 35 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:

3). He purposely did things to grieve his parents.


a). Genesis 28:8, 9 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;

4). Esau failed the grace of God.

b. [was a] plain [Strong: 8535 tam tawm from 8552; complete; usually (morally) pious; specifically, gentle, dear:--coupled together, perfect, plain, undefiled, upright.]


1). Henry M Morris, The Genesis Record: Jacob, on the other hand, was a “plain man, dwelling in tents.” Just like Abraham and Isaac, he “sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles” (Hebrews 11:9)...The translators have done Jacob a disservice by calling him a “plain” man, or a “quiet” man. The Hebrew word is tam, which means “perfect” or “complete” or possibly “mature.” It is exactly the same word God used to describe Job when he called him “a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil” (Job 1:9).  


2). This Hebrew word is found 13 times in the OT. It is only translated “plain” here. Every other instance it is used it is not referring to “plain”. In nine instances it is translated “perfect.” Once it is translated “upright.” And twice it is translated “undefiled.” In the different translations of Genesis 25:27, the closest to the Hebrew meaning is found in the two Jewish translations (See above). In the Stone Edition of THE CHUMASH, it says, “Jacob was a wholesome man.” In the Online English Translation of the Tanakh (Jewish Bible), it says “whereas Jacob was an innocent man.”
