i. [of] Bethel [Strong: 1008 Beyth-'El bayth-ale' from 1004 and 410; house of God; Beth-El, a place in Palestine:--Beth-el.]

1). This is the fulfillment of the word spoken by the unknown prophet from Judah.

a). 1 Kings 13:1-10 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the Lord unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

13:2 And he cried against the altar in the word of the Lord, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the Lord; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee.

13:3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the Lord hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

13:4 And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.

13:5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the Lord.

13:6 And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the Lord thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the Lord, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

13:7 And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.

13:8 And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:

13: 9 For so was it charged me by the word of the Lord, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.

13:10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.

2). The Rubin Edition, The Early Prophets, 1 & 2 Kings, Rabbinic Commentary, under verse 15: That Josiah extended his campaign to Beth-el shows how zealous he was to rid the land of idolatry. Beth-el was in the territory of the banished Ten Tribes and was then occupied by the new Cuthite inhabitants, but Josiah made this incursion into the north in order to eradicate the altar that was most symbolic of Jeroboam's sinfulness.  [The ArtScroll Series/Rubin Edition THE PROPHETS: KINGS Copyright 2006 by MESORAH PUBLICATIONS, Ltd.]

3). Approximately 300 years later. The kingdom was divided in 931 B.C and Josiah reigned from 640 to 609 B.C.

4). The Rubin Edition, The Early Prophets, 1 & 2 Kings, Rabbinic Commentary, under verse 16: Josiah now fulfilled the prophecy to jeroboam that a king named Josiah would one day exhume the bones of those who introduced the calamitous innovation of state-sponsored idolatry (1 Kings 13:1-3). [The ArtScroll Series/Rubin Edition THE PROPHETS: KINGS Copyright 2006 by MESORAH PUBLICATIONS, Ltd.]

5). Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible: Then he said, what title is that that I see?.... A high and large monument over a grave, with an inscription on it, more remarkable than any of the rest, which made Josiah take notice of it; and the Jews have a tradition, as Kimchi observes, that on one side of the grave grew nettles and thistles, and on the other side odoriferous herbs; which is not to be depended on; but what he further observes may be right, that the old prophet, as he gave orders to his sons to lay his body in the same grave with the man of God, believing his words would be fulfilled, so he likewise gave orders to have a distinguished monument or pillar erected over the grave; and which people in later times took care to support, in memory of the man of God, that thereby it might be known; by which means not only the bones of the man of God were preserved from being burnt, but those of the old prophet also, buried with him:
