Psalm 106:38

Psalm 106:38

And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.

a. NLT: They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters. By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan, they polluted the land with murder.

b. NIV: They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was desecrated by their blood.

c. Young’s Literal Translation: And they shed innocent blood -- Blood of their sons and of their daughters, Whom they have sacrificed to idols of Canaan, And the land is profaned with blood.

d. Amplified Bible: And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; and the land was polluted with their blood.

e. Septuagint: and shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Chanaan; and the land was defiled with blood.

f. Stone Edition Torah/Writings/Prophets: They spilled innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters whom they sacrificed to the Canaanite idols; and the land was polluted by the blood-guilt.

1. “And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters…”

a. shed [8210 * shaphak][Strong: a primitive root; to spill forth (blood, a libation, liquid metal; or even a solid, i.e. to mound up); also (figuratively) to expend (life, soul, complaint, money, etc.); intensively, to sprawl out:--cast (up), gush out, pour (out), shed(-der, out), slip.]

b. innocent [5355 * naqiy][Strong: innocent:--blameless, clean, clear, exempted, free, guiltless, innocent, quit.]

c. blood [1818 * dam][Strong: blood (as that which when shed causes death) of man or an animal; by analogy, the juice of the grape; figuratively (especially in the plural) bloodshed (i.e. drops of blood):--blood(-y, -guiltiness, (-thirsty), + innocent.]

d. sons [1121 * ben][Strong: a son (as a builder of the family name), in the widest sense (of literal and figurative relationship, including grandson, subject, nation, quality or condition, etc., (like 1, 251, etc.)):--+ afflicted, age, (Ahoh-) (Ammon-) (Hachmon-) (Lev-)ite, (anoint-)ed one, appointed to, (+) arrow, (Assyr-) (Babylon-) (Egypt-) (Grec-)ian, one born, bough, branch, breed, + (young) bullock, + (young) calf, X came up in, child, colt, X common, X corn, daughter, X of first, + firstborn, foal, + very fruitful, + postage, X in, + kid, + lamb, (+) man, meet, + mighty, + nephew, old, (+) people, + rebel, + robber, X servant born, X soldier, son, + spark, + steward, + stranger, X surely, them of, + tumultuous one, + valiant(-est), whelp, worthy, young (one), youth.]

e. daughters [1323 * bath][Strong: a daughter (used in the same wide sense as other terms of relationship, literally and figuratively):--apple (of the eye), branch, company, daughter, X first, X old, + owl, town, village.]

f. The Scriptures say quite a bit about shedding innocent blood.

1). 2 Kings 21:16 Moreover Manasseh shed innocent blood very much, till he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another; beside his sin wherewith he made Judah to sin, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.

2). 2 Kings 24:1-4 In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant three years: then he turned and rebelled against him.
24:2 And the Lord sent against him bands of the Chaldees, and bands of the Syrians, and bands of the Moabites, and bands of the children of Ammon, and sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by his servants the prophets.
24:3 Surely at the commandment of the Lord came this upon Judah, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did;
24:4 And also for the innocent blood that he shed: for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; which the Lord would not pardon.

3). Psalm 94:20-23 Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law?
94:21 They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.
94:22 But the Lord is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.
94:23 And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off.

2. “…whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan:

a. sacrificed [2076 * zabach][Strong: a primitive root; to slaughter an animal (usually in sacrifice):--kill, offer, (do) sacrifice, slay.]

b. idols [6091 * ‘atsab][Strong: an (idolatrous) image:--idol, image.]

1). The Apostle Paul makes it clear that idols, though they are mere pieces of stone or wood or metal, there are demons behind the worship of them.

2). 1 Corinthians 10:19, 20 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?
10:20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

c. Canaan [3667 * Kena’an][Strong: humiliated; Kenaan, a son a Ham; also the country inhabited by him:--Canaan, merchant, traffick.]

d. The fact that Israel engaged in child sacrifice is clearly revealed in Scripture.

1). Isaiah 57:3-5 But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the whore.
57:4 Against whom do ye sport yourselves? against whom make ye a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood.
57:5 Enflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks?

2). Jeremiah 19:4, 5 Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;
19:5 They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind:

3). Ezekiel 16:20, 21 Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter,
16:21 That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through the fire for them?

4). Ezekiel 23:36-39 The Lord said moreover unto me; Son of man, wilt thou judge Aholah and Aholibah? yea, declare unto them their abominations;
23:37 That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them.
23:38 Moreover this they have done unto me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths.
23:39 For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, lo, thus have they done in the midst of mine house.

3. “…and the land was polluted with blood.”

a. polluted [2610 * chaneph][Strong: a primitive root; to soil, especially in a moral sense:--corrupt, defile, X greatly, pollute, profane.]

b. The shedding of innocent blood will defile the nation that practices it.

Psalm 106:37

Psalm 106:37

Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,

a. NLT: They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons.

b. NIV: They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to false gods.

c. Young’s Literal Translation: And they sacrifice their sons And their daughters to destroyers,

d. Amplified Bible: Yes, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons

e. Septuagint: And they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to devils,

f. Stone Edition Torah/Writings/Prophets: And they sacrificed their sons and daughters to the demons.

1. “…they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils…”

a. sacrificed [2076 * zabach][Strong: a primitive root; to slaughter an animal (usually in sacrifice):--kill, offer, (do) sacrifice, slay.]

b. sons [1121 * ben][Strong: a son (as a builder of the family name), in the widest sense (of literal and figurative relationship, including grandson, subject, nation, quality or condition, etc., (like 1, 251, etc.)):--+ afflicted, age, (Ahoh-) (Ammon-) (Hachmon-) (Lev-)ite, (anoint-)ed one, appointed to, (+) arrow, (Assyr-) (Babylon-) (Egypt-) (Grec-)ian, one born, bough, branch, breed, + (young) bullock, + (young) calf, X came up in, child, colt, X common, X corn, daughter, X of first, + firstborn, foal, + very fruitful, + postage, X in, + kid, + lamb, (+) man, meet, + mighty, + nephew, old, (+) people, + rebel, + robber, X servant born, X soldier, son, + spark, + steward, + stranger, X surely, them of, + tumultuous one, + valiant(-est), whelp, worthy, young (one), youth.]

c. daughters [1323 * bath][Strong: a daughter (used in the same wide sense as other terms of relationship, literally and figuratively):--apple (of the eye), branch, company, daughter, X first, X old, + owl, town, village.]

d. devils [7700 * shed][Strong: a doemon (as malignant):--devil.

1). Paul wrote under the inspiration of God that offering any sacrifice to any idol is sacrificing to devils.

2). 1 Corinthians 10:19, 20 What say I then? that the idol is anything, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is anything?
10:20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

e. This Psalm is anonymous, we don’t know who wrote it. We also don’t know when it was written. The history of these verses, Psalm 106:37, 38 indicate they were practicing human sacrifice. I may be wrong but this did not occur until sometime in the 8th century B.C for Israel and sometime in the 7th century B.C for Judah. In both kingdoms history, child sacrifice preceded their fall. In light of this, these verses may have been written after both incidents. In the Stone Edition of the Torah, Writings and Prophets there is a note under the verses Psalm 106:36-46: Intermittently, throughout the periods of the Judges and the Kings.

Psalm 106:30

Psalm 106:30

Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed.

a. NLT: But Phinehas had the courage to intervene, and the plague was stopped.

b. NIV: But Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was checked.

c. Young’s Literal Translation: And Phinehas standeth, and executeth judgment, And the plague is restrained,

d. Amplified Bible: Then stood up Phinehas [the priest] and executed judgment, and so the plague was stayed.

e. Septuagint: Then Phinees stood up, and made atonement: and the plague ceased.

f. Stone Edition Torah/Writings/Prophets: And Phinehas arose and executed judgment, and the plague was halted.

1. “Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment…”

a. stood up [5975 * ‘amad][Strong: a primitive root; to stand, in various relations (literal and figurative, intransitive and transitive):--abide (behind), appoint, arise, cease, confirm, continue, dwell, be employed, endure, establish, leave, make, ordain, be (over), place, (be) present (self), raise up, remain, repair, + serve, set (forth, over, -tle, up), (make to, make to be at a, with-)stand (by, fast, firm, still, up), (be at a) stay (up), tarry.

b. executed judgment [6419 * palal][Strong: primitive root; to judge (officially or mentally); by extension, to intercede, pray:--intreat, judge(-ment), (make) pray(-er, -ing), make supplication.]

1). The variety of translations reflect the variety of definitions. Phinehas “intervened”, he definitely “executed judgment”. The Septuagint says he “made atonement”. What is interesting is that the over whelming use of this Hebrew word is to “pray”.

2). Numbers 25:1-13 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
25:2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
25:3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.
25:4 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel.
25:5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.
25:6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
25:7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
25:8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
25:9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
25:10 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
25:11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
25:12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
25:13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.

2. “…and so the plague was stayed.”

a. plague [4046 * maggephah][Strong: a pestilence; by analogy, defeat:--(X be) plague(-d), slaughter, stroke.]

b. stayed [6113 * ‘atsar][Strong: a primitive root; to inclose; by analogy, to hold back; also to maintain, rule, assemble:--X be able, close up, detain, fast, keep (self close, still), prevail, recover, refrain, X reign, restrain, retain, shut (up), slack, stay, stop, withhold (self).]

c. The putting to death of this Israelite and the Midianite woman stopped the plague of twenty three thousand Israelites because of their fornication. Not only that but God rewarded Phinehas for his zeal with a covenant of peace, but as the next verse in this text declares he and his generations were declared righteous.

1). Numbers 25:7-13 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;

Psalm 106:29

Psalm 106:29

Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them.

a. NLT: They angered the LORD with all these things, so a plague broke out among them.

b. NIV: they aroused the LORD’s anger by their wicked deeds, and a plague broke out among them.

c. Young’s Literal Translations: And they provoke to anger by their actions, And a plague breaketh forth upon them,

d. Amplified Bible: Thus they provoked the Lord to anger with their practices, and a plague broke out among them.

e. Septuagint: and destruction, was multiplied among them.

f. Stone Edition Torah/Writings/Prophets: And they angered [Him] with their behavior, and a plague broke out among them.

1. “Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions…”

a. provoked to anger [3707 * ka’ac][Strong: primitive root; to trouble; by implication, to grieve, rage, be indignant:--be angry, be grieved, take indignation, provoke (to anger, unto wrath), have sorrow, vex, be wroth.]

b. inventions [4611 * ma’alal][Strong: an act (good or bad):--doing, endeavour, invention, work.][Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew Lexicon: deed, practice, practice (usually bad), deeds, acts.]

1). The inventions, deeds or acts involved a number of idolatrous behaviors including sexual intercourse.

a). Numbers 25:1-8  And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
25:7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
25:8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

2. “…and the plague brake in upon them.”

a. plague [4046 * maggephah][Strong: a pestilence; by analogy, defeat:--(X be) plague(-d), slaughter, stroke.]

b. brake [6555 * parats][Strong: a primitive root; to break out (in many applications, direct and indirect, literal and figurative):--X abroad, (make a) breach, break (away, down, -er, forth, in, up), burst out, come (spread) abroad, compel, disperse, grow, increase, open, press, scatter, urge.]

c. There were two causes of death to Israelites in this event. One thousand were slain by the judges of the particular tribes, while most were slain by the plague that also broke out because of the sin. Twenty three died because of the plague and one thousand were slain by the leaders of Israel. These amounts are arrived at from comparing the two texts from Numbers and 1 Corinthians.

1). Numbers 25:3-9 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.
25:7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
25:8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
25:9And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

2). 1 Corinthians 10:8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

Psalm 106:28

Psalm 106:28

They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.

a. NLT: Then our ancestors joined in the worship of Baal at Peor; they even ate sacrifices offered to the dead!

b. NIV: They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;

c. Young’s Literal Translation: And they are coupled to Baal-Peor, And eat the sacrifices of the dead,

d. Amplified Bible: They joined themselves also to the [idol] Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices [offered] to the lifeless [gods].

e. Septuagint: They were joined also to Beelphegor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead. And they provoked him with their devices;

f. Stone Edition Torah/Wrintings/Prophets: Then they attached themselves to Baal Peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.

g. The study of the passage Psalm 106:28-31 involves large sections of Scripture that includes all of Numbers 25, Numbers 31:1-24 and for us in the New Covenant it includes 1 Corinthians 6:15-18, Revelation 2:14. I will do my best.

1. “They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor…”

a. joined [6775 * tsamad][Strong: a primitive root; to link, i.e. gird; figuratively, to serve, (mentally) contrive:--fasten, frame, join (self).]

1). Here the word “joined” is a euphemism for sexual intercourse. We know this from three other passages that focus on this event in Israel’s history.

a). Numbers 25:1-8  And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
25:7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
25:8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

b). 1 Corinthians 10:8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

c). 1 Corinthians 6:15-18 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
6:16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

b. Baal-Peor [1187 * Ba’al P’owr][Strong: Baal of Peor; Baal-Peor, a Moabitish deity:--Baal-peor.]

2. “…and ate the sacrifices of the dead.”

a. ate [398 * ‘akal][Strong: a primitive root; to eat (literally or figuratively):--X at all, burn up, consume, devour(-er, up), dine, eat(-er, up), feed (with), food, X freely, X in...wise(-deed, plenty), (lay) meat, X quite.]

b. sacrifices [2077 * zebach][Strong: from 2076; properly, a slaughter, i.e. the flesh of an animal; by implication, a sacrifice (the victim or the act):--offer(- ing), sacrifice.

c. dead [4191 * muwth][Strong: a primitive root: to die (literally or figuratively); causatively, to kill:--X at all, X crying, (be) dead (body, man, one), (put to, worthy of) death, destroy(-er), (cause to, be like to, must) die, kill, necro(-mancer), X must needs, slay, X surely, X very suddenly, X in (no) wise.]

1). Jamison-Fausset-Brown: sacrifices of the dead—that is, of lifeless idols, contrasted with "the living God".

2). One of my all-time favorite descriptions of idol worship from God’s point of view is found in Isaiah. It is a long passage but I can’t resist posting the whole passage. I love it.

a). Isaiah 44:9-20 They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.
44:10 Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing?
44:11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.
44:12 The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint.
44:13 The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.
44:14 He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.
44:15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.
44:16 He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:
44:17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.
44:18 They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.
44:19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
44:20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

d. Part of the religion of the Midianites consisted of worshipping the dead and eating sacrifices to them and engaging in sexual intercourse. The only reason this whole debacle happened is because of Balaam instructing Balac the king of Moab, to ensnare Israel in sin through fornication. This is mentioned in both Testaments.

1). Numbers 31:14-18 And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.
31:15 And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?
31:16 Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord.
31:17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
31:18 But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

2). Revelation 2:14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.

Ephesians 1:21

Ephesians 1:21

Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

a. NLT: Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come.

b. NIV: far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

c. Young’s Literal Translation: far above all principality, and authority, and might, and lordship, and every name named, not only in this age, but also in the coming one;

d. Amplified Bible: Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named [above every title that can be conferred], not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and the world which are to come.

e. Worrell Translation: Far above all rule, and authority, and power, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come;

f. Peshitta Eastern Text: Far above all angels and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world but also in the world which is to come.

1. “Far above all principality, power, and might, and dominion…”

a. far above [Strong: 5231 * huperano hoop-er-an'-o from 5228 and 507; above upward, i.e. greatly higher (in place or rank):--far above, over.]

b. all [Strong: 3956 *  pas pas including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.] [Thayer: individually, each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, all things, everything, collectively, some of all types.]

1). This verse is included in a passage detailing the authority that was given to believers, the church, the body of Christ, when Christ Jesus rose from the dead. Remember what he told the disciples in Matthew 28:18, 19 He said “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” That same power was given to the church, to believers, for them to preach the gospel to every person on earth. That same authority is what is being spoken about in the passage as being part of our inheritance that God wants us to see and use. In this passage Paul is praying for God to give us spiritual eyes to see the extent of our inheritance.

a). Ephesians 1:15-21 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
1:16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
1:19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
1:20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

2). What must be noted here is there is no distinction between good or bad principalities, powers, might, or dominions. It declares “all”. There are clear examples in Scripture of commanding demonic spirits but none commanding good angels, but here the Scripture does say “all”.

c. principality [Strong: 746 * arche ar-khay' from 756; (properly abstract) a commencement, or (concretely) chief (in various applications of order, time, place, or rank):--beginning, corner, (at the, the) first (estate), magistrate, power, principality, principle, rule.]

d. power [Strong: 1849 * exousia ex-oo-see'-ah (in the sense of ability); privilege, i.e. (subjectively) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or (objectively) mastery (concretely, magistrate, superhuman, potentate, token of control), delegated influence:--authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength.]

e. might [Strong 1411 * dunamis doo'-nam-is force (literally or figuratively); specially, miraculous power (usually by implication, a miracle itself):--ability, abundance, meaning, might(-ily, -y, -y deed), (worker of) miracle(-s), power, strength, violence, mighty (wonderful) work.]

f. dominion [Strong: 2963 * kuriotes koo-ree-ot'-ace  mastery, i.e. (concretely and collectively) rulers:--dominion, government.]

1). There is two other passages where lists of angels and demons are given.

a). Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

b). Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

2. “…and every name that is named…”

a. every [Strong: 3956 *  pas pas including all the forms of declension; apparently a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:--all (manner of, means), alway(-s), any (one), X daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no(-thing), X thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.] [Thayer: individually, each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, all things, everything, collectively, some of all types.]

b. name [Strong: 3686 * onoma on'-om-ah  a "name" (literally or figuratively) (authority, character):--called, (+ sur-)name(-d).] [Thayer: name: univ. of proper names, the name is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering, the name, i.e. for one's rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds etc., persons reckoned up by name, the cause or reason named: on this account, because he suffers as a Christian, for this reason.]

c. named [Strong: 3687 *  onomazo on-om-ad'-zo from 3686; to name, i.e. assign an appellation; by extension, to utter, mention, profess:--call, name.]

1). Noting that the phrase “every name that is named” is mentioned after “all principality, power, and might, and dominion” it is easy to conclude it is referring to names such as  Michael, Gabriel and Lucifer/Satan.

3. “…not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:”

a. not [Strong: 3756 * ou oo, also (before a vowel) ouk ook, and (before an aspirate) ouch ookh a primary word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay, neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy), when, + without, + yet but.]

b. only [Strong: 3440 * monon mon'-on neuter of 3441 as adverb; merely:--alone, but, only.]

c. in [Strong: 1722 * en en a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

d. this [Strong: 5129 * toutoi too'-to dative case singular masculine or neuter of 3778; to (in, with or by) this (person or thing):--here(-by, -in), him, one, the same, there(-in), this.

e. world [Strong: 165 * aion ahee-ohn' from the same as 104; properly, an age; by extension, perpetuity (also past); by implication, the world; specially (Jewish) a Messianic period (present or future):--age, course, eternal, (for) ever(-more), (n-)ever, (beginning of the , while the) world (began, without end).]

f. but [Strong: 235 * alla al-lah' neuter plural of 243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):--and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]

g. also [Strong: 2532 * kai kahee apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection (or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]

h. in [Strong: 1722 * en en a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between 1519 and 1537); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.:--about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-)by (+ all means), for (... sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-)in(-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-)on, (open-)ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, (speedi-)ly, X that, X there(-in, -on), through(-out), (un-)to(-ward), under, when, where(-with), while, with(-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) preposition.]

i. the [Strong: to from 3588 * ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

j. one coming [Strong: 3195 * mello mel'-lo a strengthened form of 3199 (through the idea of expectation); to intend, i.e. be about to be, do, or suffer something (of persons or things, especially events; in the sense of purpose, duty, necessity, probability, possibility, or hesitation):--about, after that, be (almost), (that which is, things, + which was for) to come, intend, was to (be), mean, mind, be at the point, (be) ready, + return, shall (begin), (which, that) should (after, afterwards, hereafter) tarry, which was for, will, would, be yet.]

1). Paul then writes that the authority is not only in this age but also in the next. In the next age some faithful believers will rule and judge on the earth.

a). Matthew 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

b). Luke 19:11-19 And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.
19:12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
19:13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
19:14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.
19:15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
19:16 Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.
19:17 And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
19:18 And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.
19:19 And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.

c). Revelation 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

2). In the next age some faithful believers will judge angels.

a). 1 Corinthians 6:2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
6:3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?

b). The superior judges the inferior, not the other way around.
