Job 2:11

Job 2:11

Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came everyone from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

a. NLT: When three of Job’s friends heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him. Their names were Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite.

b. NIV: When Job’s three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite, heard about all the troubles that had come upon him, they set out from their homes and met together by agreement to go and sympathize with him and comfort him.

c. Amplified Bible: Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came each one from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite, for they had made an appointment together to come to condole with him and to comfort him.

d. Septuagint: Now his three friends having heard of all the evil that was come upon him, came to him each from his own country: Eliphaz the king of the Thaemans, Baldad sovereign of the Saucheans, Sophar king of he Minaeans: and they came to him with one accord, to comfort and to visit him.

1. “Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him,

a. Job was a very rich man and very well known, so it is probable that these three friends were also rich and well known but not as much as Job.

1). Job 1:3  His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

b. Job, literally lost all his wealth. The Scriptures do not say he owned any land but surely he did. The record speaks of all seven sons having “houses” Job 1:4. Surely much if not all of the land that the cattle grazed on was his land.

2. “…they came everyone from his own place…”

a. The Scripture goes on to mention where each of these friends came from, their nationality.

3. “…Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite…”

a. Eliphaz [464 * ‘Eliyphaz][Strong:  God of gold; Eliphaz, the name of one of Job's friends, and of a son of Esau:--Eliphaz.]

1). Unger’s Bible Dictionary: Eliphaz is called “the Temanite”, and was probably from Teman, in Idumea. As Eliphaz, the son of Esau, had a son named Teman, from whom the place took its name, there is reason to conclude that this Eliphaz was a descendant of the former Eliphaz.

b. Bildad [1085 * Bildad][Strong: of uncertain derivation; Bildad, one of Job's friends:--Bildad.]

1). The AMG, Complete Old Testament Word Study Dictionary says it’s possible that Bildad descended from a son of Abraham because he was a Shuhite.

2). Genesis 25:1, 2 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah.
2 And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.

c. Zophar [6691 * Tsowphar][Strong: departing; Tsophar, a friend of Job:--Zophar.]

d. Naamathite [5284 * Na’amathiy][Strong: patrial from a place corresponding in name (but not identical) with 5279; a Naamathite, or inhabitant of Naamah:--Naamathite.]

1). The AMG, Complete Old Testament Word Study Dictionary says it is an unknown site.

4. “…for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.”

a. appointment [3259 * ya’ad][Strong: primitive root; to fix upon (by agreement or appointment); by implication, to meet (at a stated time), to summon (to trial), to direct (in a certain quarter or position), to engage (for marriage): -agree,(maxke an) appoint(-ment,a time), assemble (selves), betroth, gather (selves, together), meet (together), set (a time).]

b. These three friends fixed a time to come together and mourn with and comfort Job in all his loss.
