Isaiah 55:7
Let the
wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him
return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he
will abundantly pardon.
a. NLT: Let the wicked change their ways and
banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the LORD that he
may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously.

The Scriptures are so plain and simple, we return to the Lord by forsaking our
ways and thoughts. We need to renew our minds by thinking His thoughts.

Romans 12:1, 2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that
ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is
your reasonable service.
And
be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your
mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of
God.

Under the New Covenant the renewing of our mind begins after the new birth,
after we have been born again. Under the Old Covenant there was no new birth
but there was a limited spiritual experience that God accomplished in their
lives. See notes on Genesis 17:9-13 regarding Old Covenant circumcision.

According to Blue Letter Bible this Hebrew word is used 46 times in the Old
Testament. 32 times it is translated “forgive/forgiven” and 13 times it is
translated “pardon” and one time it is translated “spare”.
