Think not that I have come to
send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
a. NLT: “Don’t imagine that I came to
bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.

1). Jesus is not speaking literally
here, but figuratively. The sword he is referring to is the sword of the Word
of God, and the Sword of the Spirit, which is also the Word.
a). Hebrews 4:12, 13 For the word of
God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even
to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and
is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
4:13 Neither is there any creature
that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the
eyes of him with whom we have to do.
2). As we see in the following verses,
the context is family relationships and where Christ is and is not in each
relationship.
