Matthew 13:54
And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in
their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath
this man this wisdom,
and these mighty
works?

his hometown. When he taught there in the synagogue, everyone was amazed and
said, “Where does he get this wisdom and the power to do miracles?”

1). His “own country” was Nazareth,
where he grew up. His whole family was well known here as we see in the
passage. Jesus had previously moved away when he began his early ministry.
a). Matthew 4:13-17 And leaving
Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the
borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
4:14 That it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
4:15 The land of Zabulon, and the
land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the
Gentiles;
4:16 The people which sat in
darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of
death light is sprung up.
4:17 From that time Jesus began to
preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
2). The Life And Times Of Jesus
The Messiah, Alfred Edersheim: Many, even orthodox commentators, hold that
his history (Luke 4:16-30), is the same as that related in Saint Matthew
13:54-58, and Saint Mark 6:1-6. But for the reasons about to be stated, I have
come, although somewhat hesitatingly, to the conclusion, that the narrative of
St Luke and those of Saint Matthew and Saint Mark refer to different events. 1.
The narrative in Saint Luke (which we shall call A) referes to commencement of
Christ’s Ministry, while those of Saint Matthew and Saint Mark (which we shall
call B) are placed at a later period. Nor does it seem likely, that our Lord
would have entirely abandoned Nazareth after one rejection. 2. In narrative A,
Christ is without disciples; in narrative B He is accompanied by them. 3. In
narrative A no miracles are recorded—in fact, His words about Elijah and Elisha
preclude any idea of them; while in narrative B there are a few, though not
many. 4. In narrative A he is thrust out of the city immediately after His
sermon, while narrative B implies, that He continued for some time in Nazareth,
only wondering at their unbelief.

I am in agreement with Alfred Edersheim that Matthew 13:54-58 and Mark 6:1-6
are the same event and the account in Luke 4:16-30 is an entirely different
event. The comparative verse to Matthew 13:54 is Mark 6:1.
