Matthew
10:38
And he that taketh not his cross,
and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
a. NLT: If you refuse to take up your
cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.
b. NIV: Whoever does not take up their
cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
c. Young’s Literal Translation: and
whoever doth not receive his cross and follow after me, is not worthy of me.
d. Amplified Bible: And he who does
not take up his cross and follow Me [cleave steadfastly to Me, conforming
wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying also] is not worthy of
Me.
e. Worrell Translation: And whosoever
does not take up his cross, and follow Me, is not worthy of me.
1. “And he that taketh not his
cross…”
a. and [2532 * kai] [Strong:
apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a
cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection
(or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but,
even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. he [3739 * hos] [Strong: including
feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho probably a primary word (or perhaps
a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun,
who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which,
who(-m, -se), etc.]
c. that taketh [2983 * lambano]
[Strong: a prolonged form of a primary verb, which is use only as an alternate
in certain tenses; to take (in very many applications, literally and
figuratively (properly objective or active, to get hold of; whereas 1209 is
rather subjective or passive, to have offered to one; while 138 is more
violent, to seize or remove)):--accept, + be amazed, assay, attain, bring, X
when I call, catch, come on (X unto), + forget, have, hold, obtain, receive (X
after), take (away, up).]
d. not [3756 * ou] [Strong: also
(before a vowel) ouk ook, and (before an aspirate) ouch ookh a primary
word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay,
neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy),
when, + without, + yet but.]
e. his [846 * autos] [Strong: from the
particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling
wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative
1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other
persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same,
((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves),
there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this
(man), those, together, very, which.]
f. cross [4716 * stauros] [Strong: from
the base of 2476; a stake or post (as set upright), i.e. (specially), a pole or
cross (as an instrument of capital punishment); figuratively, exposure to
death, i.e. self-denial; by implication, the atonement of Christ:--cross.]
1). Taking up our cross means denial of
our flesh nature, and desire to walk in it obeying our carnal desires. Paul,
under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost wrote of in more than a few instances.
Each one is in the flow of what a believer must do to take up his cross.
a). Philippians 3:17-19 Brethren,
be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an
ensample.
3:18 (For many walk, of whom I have
told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the
cross of Christ:
3:19 Whose end is destruction, whose
God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly
things.)
b). Romans 6:1-7 What shall we say
then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are
dead to sin, live any longer therein?
6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as
were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
6:4 Therefore we are buried with him
by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the
glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
6:5 For if we have been planted
together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his
resurrection:
6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is
crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we
should not serve sin.
6:7 For he that is dead is freed from
sin.
c). Galatians 5:16-24 This I say then,
Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the
Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the
other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit,
ye are not under the law.
5:19 Now the works of the flesh are
manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred,
variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness,
revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told
you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom
of God.
5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
5:23 Meekness, temperance: against
such there is no law.
5:24 And they that are Christ's have
crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
2). It is in this spirit, of refusing
to take up our cross that “being worthy of me” that is, Christ, must be
considered.
2. “…and followeth after me…”
a. and [2532 * kai] [Strong:
apparently, a primary particle, having a copulative and sometimes also a
cumulative force; and, also, even, so then, too, etc.; often used in connection
(or composition) with other particles or small words:--and, also, both, but,
even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.]
b. followeth [190 * akoloutheo]
[Strong: from 1 (as a particle of union) and keleuthos (a road); properly, to
be in the same way with, i.e. to accompany (specially, as a disciple):--follow,
reach.]
c. after [3694 * opiso] [Strong: from
the same as 3693 with enclitic of direction; to the back, i.e. aback (as adverb
or preposition of time or place; or as noun):--after, back(-ward), (+ get)
behind, + follow.]
d. me [3450 * mou] [Strong: the
simpler form of 1700; of me:--I, me, mine (own), my.]
3. “…is not worthy of me.”
a. is [2076 * esti] [Strong: third
person singular present indicative of 1510; he (she or it) is; also (with
neuter plural) they are:--are, be(-long), call, X can(-not), come, consisteth,
X dure for a while, + follow, X have, (that) is (to say), make, meaneth, X must
needs, + profit, + remaineth, + wrestle.]
b. not [3756 * ou] [Strong: also
(before a vowel) ouk ook, and (before an aspirate) ouch ookh a primary
word; the absolute negative (compare 3361) adverb; no or not:--+ long, nay,
neither, never, no (X man), none, (can-)not, + nothing, + special, un(-worthy),
when, + without, + yet but.]
c. worthy [514 * axios] [Strong: probably
from 71; deserving, comparable or suitable (as if drawing praise):--due reward,
meet, (un-)worthy.] [Thayer: weighing, having weight, having the weight of
another thing of like value, worth as much, befitting, congruous, corresponding
to a thing, of one who has merited anything worthy, both in a good and a bad
sense.] Zodhiates: An estimate or value. Some believe it to be a set of scales
where the weights bring or draw down the beam to a horizontal level when the
weights are equal on each side.]
1). It is in this spirit, of refusing
to take up our cross that “being worthy of me” that is, being worthy of Christ,
must be considered.
