Isaiah 11:1


Isaiah 11:1

And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

a. ASV: And there shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots shall bear fruit.

b. YLT: And a rod hath come out from the stock of Jesse, And a branch from his roots is fruitful.

c. Classic Amplified: And there shall come forth a Shoot out of the stock of Jesse [David’s father], and a Branch out of his roots shall grow and bear fruit.

d. Septuagint: And there shall come forth a rod out of the root of Jesse, and a blossom shall come up from [his] root:

e. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/ Writings: A staff will emerge from the stump of Jesse and a shoot will sprout from his roots.

1. “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse…”

a. [And there shall] come forth [Strong: 3318 yâtsâʼ, yaw-tsaw'; a primitive root; to go (causatively, bring) out, in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively, direct and proxim.:—× after, appear, × assuredly, bear out, × begotten, break out, bring forth (out, up), carry out, come (abroad, out, thereat, without), be condemned, depart(-ing, -ure), draw forth, in the end, escape, exact, fail, fall (out), fetch forth (out), get away (forth, hence, out), (able to, cause to, let) go abroad (forth, on, out), going out, grow, have forth (out), issue out, lay (lie) out, lead out, pluck out, proceed, pull out, put away, be risen, × scarce, send with commandment, shoot forth, spread, spring out, stand out, × still, × surely, take forth (out), at any time, × to (and fro), utter.]

b. [a] rod [Strong: 2415 chôṭêr, kho'-ter; from an unused root of uncertain signification; a twig:—rod.]

c. [out of the] stem [Strong: 1503 gezaʻ, geh'-zah; from an unused root meaning to cut down (trees); the trunk or stump of a tree (as felled or as planted):—stem, stock.]

d. [of] Jesse [Strong: 3448 Yishay, yee-shah'-ee; by Aramaic אִישַׁי ʼÎyshay; from the same as H3426; extant; Jishai, David's father:—Jesse.]

1). David is often referred to as the “root of Jesse” because David’s father’s name was Jesse.

a). 1 Samuel 16:1 And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

2. “...and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:”

a. [and a] Branch [Strong: 5342 nêtser, nay'-tser; from H5341 in the sense of greenness as a striking color; a shoot; figuratively, a descendant:—branch.]

1). Though it is a different hebrew word the English word “branch” in the following verses also refers to Christ Jesus.

a). Jeremiah 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

b). Jeremiah 33:15 In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.

c). Zechariah 3:8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.

d). Zechariah 6:12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:

b. [shall] grow [Strong: 6509 pârâh, paw-raw'; a primitive root; to bear fruit (literally or figuratively):—bear, bring forth (fruit), (be, cause to be, make) fruitful, grow, increase.]

c. [out of his] roots [Strong: 8328 sheresh, sheh'-resh; from H8327; a root (literally or figuratively):—bottom, deep, heel, root.]
